Charlton Athletic are on the verge of signing former Luton Town defender Dan Potts on a contract until January, as reported by South London Press journalist Richard Cawley on X.
The 30-year-old left-back, who left Luton Town at the end of last season, is expected to link up with the League One side after a trial period during pre-season. Potts, who made 216 appearances for Luton during his eight-year spell at Kenilworth Road, played a crucial role in the club’s rise from League Two to the Premier League.
However, following the Hatters’ relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season, the decision was made to part ways with the defender, and he became a free agent in June.
Charlton manager Nathan Jones, who previously worked with Potts at Luton, expressed his admiration for the player: “He has had a wonderful journey and played in the Premier League. He has played in play-off finals, scored penalties in a winning final and has done fantastically well for me.”
“He has been around and we’ve had a look at him. There will be a decision on him very soon. Provided they can still contribute then they work as catalysts in the environment. They help others as well. I wouldn’t bring Dan Potts in if he wasn’t a real example in terms of how goes about his work – how he trains, how he does stuff and is a leader in the changing room and so on.”
Potts could make a valuable addition to Charlton as they continue their promising start to the season, having picked up nine points from their opening four games. They opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic, followed by wins against Leyton Orient (1-0) and Bolton Wanderers (2-0). They were beaten by Reading at the end of August, leaving them with nine points from a possible 12.
Who Is Dan Potts?
Potts is a versatile left-back who began his career at West Ham United, joining the club’s academy at the age of nine. He debuted first-team in December 2011, just after signing a professional contract. Potts quickly gained recognition, winning the Young Hammer of the Year award in 2012. Although his time at West Ham was marked by flashes of promise, including a debut in the Premier League, injuries and loan spells at Colchester and Portsmouth limited his ability to establish himself fully at the club.
Potts’ career truly blossomed after he joined Luton Town in 2015. Over nine years with the club, he became a mainstay in the squad, helping Luton rise from League Two to the Premier League. His crowning moment came in the 2022–23 Championship play-off final, where he scored the winning penalty that secured Luton’s promotion to the top flight. Known for his leadership and defensive reliability, Potts made 216 appearances for the Hatters before parting ways with the club in 2024.
On the international stage, Potts initially represented the United States U-20 team but later switched to England, featuring in their U-18 and U-19 squads. His experience and versatility have made him a valuable asset throughout his career.
Writer’s View
While coming to the tail end of his career now, Potts is still going to be a huge asset for Charlton. There’s a leaning toward younger players in the lower leagues, but there’s also no substitute for experience, and Potts has that in abundance.
He’s also known to Nathan Jones, and managers often have generals they work with regularly who they know they can trust. There’s no doubt Potts, the son of former West Ham man Steve, will be a big asset at the Valley as the Addicks seek a Championship return.
