Luton Town Failed In Transfer Window Swoop For 23-Year-Old International

According to Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony, Luton Town had a transfer window appraoch for winger Kwame Poku.

The revelation was made during MacAnthony’s Hard Truth podcast, where he discussed the deadline day activity at the League One club.

Luton, currently struggling in the Championship, reportedly made a late move for Poku after selling Chiedozie Ogbene to Ipswich Town. While the bid was described as “one in the millions,” MacAnthony confirmed that Peterborough were not interested in selling the 22-year-old at that stage.

“Luton did come in quite late in the window for Kwame after they sold a winger to the Premier League,” MacAnthony said. “It was a good bid, one in the millions, but at that stage we just told them we weren’t selling Kwame.”

Despite the interest, MacAnthony stressed that Peterborough are content with their position regarding Poku. “We are quite relaxed about Kwame, and he has been as good as gold about everything, because he will still be under 24 when his contract ends, so we would still get a fee for him,” he added.

Poku began his career with Cray Wanderers before moving to Worthing in February 2019, where he scored twice in 12 Isthmian League appearances. His performances earned him a move to Colchester United in May 2019 following a successful trial.

The 23-year-old made his professional debut for Colchester in an EFL Trophy win against Gillingham in September 2019 and netted his first goal later that month in a 2–1 victory over Leyton Orient. By December, Colchester had secured him on a new two-and-a-half-year contract. In August 2021, Poku signed a four-year deal with Peterborough United.

On the international stage, Poku, who is of Ghanaian descent, received his first call-up to the Ghana national team in March 2021 for African Cup of Nations qualifiers. He made his debut later that month, coming on as a substitute in a 3–1 victory over São Tomé and Príncipe.

The Hatters, who dropped out of the Premier League last season, got a reported £8 million for Ogbene, but were unable to spend the profits of the sale before the transfer window. They’ve had an awful start to the season, losing three of their four matches, as well as a bulk of the Premier League squad, making a promotion push this season look unlikely.

More misery for Luton Town fans! Poku is a quality player, but failing with a bid has left the Hatters short. They’ve struggled this season to get going and even hung on to Joe Taylor despite him being widely expected to make a move away from Kenilworth Road. Rob Edwards has a big job on his hands picking them up, and salvaging anything from this already challenging campaign.

As for Poku, if he keeps performing to the levels he’s shown recently, he’ll have no problem at all dropping into a Championship side, or higher, in six or twelve months’ time. Posh normally get their transfer business right, and in Poku, they’ve got another gem to turn around for a big profit.
