Fleetwood Town Agree Premier League Loan

According to the Football Insider, Fleetwood Town have agreed a deal with Manchester United to sign young defender Rhys Bennett on a season-long loan.

Charlie Adam’s Fleetwood have reportedly agreed a loan deal for the young talent, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Stockport County. However, his loan spell at the then League Two club didn’t go according to plan, with Bennett making just one appearance in a 4-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers.

The 20-year-old did feature for his parent club in pre-season but with the Premier League giants strengthening defensively with the signings of Matthijs de Light and Leny Yoro, Bennett finds himself down the pecking order in Erik Ten Hag’s squad. Bennett was a part of the young United squad that won the FA Youth Cup against Nottingham Forest in 2022 and now looks set for his second stint in senior football. The 20-year-old will hope his second spell away from Old Trafford will improve regarding game time.

According to the article, Bennett has agreed to the loan move and is currently undergoing a medical at the recently relegated side.

The Cods have had a busy window, with seven new players walking through the door at the Highbury Stadium. Defensive players Zech Medley, James Bolton, and Mackenzie Hunt have been brought in to strengthen the backline, whilst Ben Heneghan has departed to join Port Vale. Likewise, five other players have gone the opposite way, including the likes of Jayden Stockley, Promise Omochere and Junior Quitirna, who have all departed for undisclosed fees. It seems Fleetwood aren’t done with transfer business and with the window closing in just over a day, clubs, including the Cods, are scrambling to get their business done before the deadline.

The Cods have experienced a rocky start in the League, remaining unbeaten but only winning once. Sitting 11th, they have experienced a successful run in the EFL Trophy, beating Championship and League One opposition in West Bromwich Albion and Rotherham United. They have been drawn against another Championship side in the form of Stoke City in the third round.

Writer’s View

A loan move for the 20-year-old makes sense for all parties here. Fleetwood are getting a centre-back who has Manchester United first-team experience, Manchester United are loaning out one of their prospects to get more game time and experience under his belt, and the player himself now has a chance to impress and improve yet again in League Two. Although his time at Stockport wasn’t particularly successful, it provided him with valuable experience of League Two football, which could benefit him if he does move to Fleetwood.

It is no secret that the Cods are a team that wants to be at the top end of the table come the end of the season. More bodies through the door at Highbury won’t go amissed, with the gruelling nature of League Two this season. As Fleetwood use a back three, it does mean that Charlie Adam’s side does ultimately need more defensive cover in case of injuries and fixture congestion.
