Blackpool have secured the loan of keeper Harry Tyrer from Premier League side Everton.
The Seasiders have had a miserable start to the season, losing 3-0 at home to Stockport last weekend in the final game of Neil Critchley’s reign. They picked up a little this weekend, scoring four at Cambridge, only to concede four as well.
Keeper Dan Grimshaw recently moved to Plymouth Argyle, meaning they needed to fill the keeper’s jersey before the transfer window closed, and 22-year-old Tyrer is the man they’ve chosen to do just that. He said he was eager to get started at Bloomfield Road.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the fans and my team mates – I can’t wait to get started,” he told the club’s official website.
“This is a massive club with a great fan base, so it was a decision that I wasn’t going to turn down. I developed a really close connection with everyone at Chesterfield last season, and want to do that here at Blackpool.
“I’m expecting it to be a good challenge for me this season, and it’s one that I know I am ready for. I love winning and that’s what I’ll be aiming to help the team do many times this season.”
Tyrer has progressed through the youth ranks at Everton, but hasn’t made a senior appearance for the Merseyside club. He spent last season on loan in the National League with Chesterfield, whom he helped to the title. That’s enabled him to skip a League One loan and move straight into the third tier with the struggling Tangerines. The move will disappoint the Spireites, who had been hopeful of taking Tyrer back to Derbyshire as they seek to join Blackpool in League One.
As for the Tangerines, their search for a manager goes on. They’re in action this week, travelling to Blackburn in the EFL Cup as a result of the only game Critchley did win this season, against Burton Albion. Tyrer is not expected to play, although he will be in contention at the weekend against Wycombe Wanderers.
Writer’s View
Tyrer should be a big success at Blackpool because, at present, he’s going to see a lot of the ball. They’re a rudderless outfit right now, and they’ll most likely take a good thumping against Blackburn.
They need to get pointed in the right direction, and success starts with no conceding goals. They showed this weekend against Cambridge that they could score, but stand-in keeper Richard O’Donnell was not quite as successful at keeping them out.
The only issue here is the keeper profile. Tyrer is a big lad, a shot-stopper and great in the air. What if a new manager fancies a ball-playing keeper, one who operates more as a sweeper, as has been the trend in recent seasons? Signing a player when there’s no manager is always risky, and Blackpool have taken a risk.
