Millwall Boss Frustrated by Transfer Window

Millwall’s Neil Harris has outlined his “frustration” with the lack of confirmed signings at the Den but the Lions head coach confirmed that new arrivals will join before the summer transfer deadline.

Millwall made high-profile additions to their squad with Japhet Tanganga arriving and Macauley Lagnstaff signing in July. The Lions also secured two new goalkeepers Liam Roberts and Lukas Jensen on free transfers.

However, further signings have been harder to get over the line. Millwall have been linked with Middlesbrough midfielder Josh Coburn throughout August. But the Championship clubs are yet to agree a deal, as reported by the Northern Echo.

The Lions have started the 2024/25 Championship campaign with two defeats and seven goals conceded. Harris’ outfit came back from two goals down to lead in a 4-3 loss at Bristol City on Saturday. However, the Robins’ substitutes Fally Mayulu and Scott Twine added two late goals at Ashton Gate to confirm a second consecutive loss for Millwall, as recorded by Whoscored.

When speaking to the South London Press about the Bristol City defeat and the need for more players, Harris outlined his frustrations. Ultimately, the former Millwall player feels his squad is too thin and the lack of depth was the difference during the loss on Saturday.

“I have been very honest, open and passionate with my thought processes with needing players in the building.

“Everyone understands my frustration towards it. The fans can certainly see how much effort, commitment and dedication the players gave for 78 minutes at Bristol City, but they can see the difference between the two squads.

“Our rival brings on quality and game-changers, and we struggle to see the game out because we can’t make one or two subs.”

Moreover, the 47-year-old head coach highlighted the importance of his side adding reinforcements before September 1 and he feels confident that new arrivals will join the squad.

“We will add players to the group before next Friday’s deadline. We have to. At the moment, we’re working with a core group of 14 outfield players.

“That’s untenable in the Championship. That has been shown in the first two games of the season.”

Writer’s View

Harris’ anxiousness about his squad for the upcoming campaign is understandable. While the Millwall has a core from last season, with just Alex Mitchell and Bartosz Bialkowsk departing this summer, the South London side has struggled early in the new Championship campaign.

Harris and Millwall will desperately want more first-team quality through the door before the window shuts. Links with Coburn suggest that a central midfielder is high on the Lions’ wishlist. Moreover, with Adam Mayor, Duncan Watmore and Aidomo Emakhu as the only wide attacking options, a winger could be a priority too.
