Sheffield Wednesday are looking into pursuing a loan move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Alfie Devine, according to The Star.
The Owls are yet to decide whether to make a concrete offer, but Devine is said to be high on their list of targets for the remainder of the window. With the Premier League set to begin, young players from the top-flight are likely to be on the move as sides finalise their squads ahead of the new season, with many prospects having been assessed over pre-season.
20-year-old Devine is already experienced in the EFL having spent the first half of last season on loan at Port Vale before moving up a division for a temporary spell at Plymouth Argyle. The midfielder has also played twice for his parent club, including a goal in the FA Cup, and is said to be highly thought of by the hierarchy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Former manager Jose Mourinho in particular has spoken highly of Devine, characterising him as a player with ‘an instinct to appear in finishing zones and to score goals.’
The Warrington-born midfielder is also a regular at international level, having appeared for England up to under-20 level, where he has played 13 times. He has even trained with the senior team, having been drafted in to cover for injuries in September 2023.
Wednesday have been busy in the window thus far, and Devine would be the club’s 12th signing of the summer. The likes of Nathaniel Chalobah have been brought in to add experience, as well as youth through players such as Charlie McNeill. Those moves look to have paid off thus far with a strong start to the campaign for Danny Rohl’s outfit, with the Owls having won both their games in impressive fashion. Their fans will be hoping that Devine can improve them even further if he signs, with many optimistic that the club can build on last season’s dramatic survival and drive up the table.
Writer’s View
Hillsborough seems to be the place to be at the moment, with lots of movement in and out of the club going into the new season. They’ve started the season well and have momentum, so any more moves will be carefully considered so as not to upset the apple cart and halt their form. As for the player, Devine struggled at Plymouth last year and will hope Wednesday will be a different story; they’re a club on the up who play exciting football, providing good conditions for the youngster to thrive on loan.
