Newly-relegated Burnley are reportedly interested in a move for former Sheffield United defender John Egan, according to Alan Nixon.
The Cork-born defender made only six league appearances for the Blades last term as they suffered relegation from the Premier League. He had represented the Yorkshire outfit over 200 times since heading north from Brentford in 2018.
Egan was a mainstay in two successful Championship promotion attempts during his time at Bramhall Lane and was a regular during the two consecutive seasons in the top division.
He was a key part of a defence that conceded only 39 times as the club finished ninth in the 2019-20 season. Relegation followed the year after and he would go on to make a further 91 Championship appearances before top-flight status was regained.
Having missed the majority of the disastrous Premier League campaign through injury, he found himself as one of several high-profile departures as the club dropped back into the second tier.
Burnley, who themselves dropped out of the top flight, are looking to build a promotion-winning squad under a new manager. Scott Parker has been brought in to replace Vincent Kompany who departed for the huge job at Bayern Munich.
The Lancashire outfit are now reportedly casting an eye over the Republic of Ireland international as they look set to lose Dara O’Shea who is attracting Premier League interest in the form of Brentford and Ipswich Town.
The signing of Egan would add experience to the Burnley defence and provide a short-term replacement for O’Shea should he depart Turf Moor.

The signing of John Egan on a free transfer makes sense for Burnley. He is only 31 years old and has vast Championship experience, including being a two-time promotion winner.
It is surprising Egan still finds himself without a club and this would represent an excellent move for him too, joining a club that will be expected to be pushing at the top end of the division.
