New Wrexham Signing Hails “Unbelievable” Plymouth Argyle Boss

Wrexham signed defender Dan Scarr from Plymouth Argyle on Friday and the 29-year-old praised Wayne Rooney for supporting his move to the Racecourse Ground.

Scarr completed his three-year deal with Wrexham after making 100 appearances for Argyle. He is Wrexham’s seventh signing of the summer window and second from Plymouth, following goalkeeper Callum Burton, as Phil Parkinson brings in more League One experience following the Red Dragon’s promotion from League Two.

Scarr moved to Home Park from Walsall in 2021. The defender was part of the Pilgrim’s League One title-winning side in 2022/23. However, new Plymouth manager Rooney, who took charge of the Championship side in May, has made several defensive signings since his arrival.

During the summer window, the former England international signed two new centre-backs, Victor Pálsson and Kornél Szűcs, per Transfermarkt. As a result, former first-team Plymouth players, like Scarr have been allowed to leave the club. Despite departing the Devonshire side this summer, Scarr said he had no hard feelings with Rooney.

When speaking to The Leader about the transfer, Scarr was extremely complimentary of how Rooney handled the move to Wrexham.

“He was unbelievable and I really can’t speak more highly of him. He came in earlier this year and he’s so down to earth and gave me all his support.

“There was no nastiness whatsoever and that made things much easier.”

In response to Scarr’s departure, Rooney stated that he was looking for further defensive reinforcements during an interview with BBC Radio Devon. But the former Birmingham City boss also took the chance to praise his former Plymouth player.

“For Dan it was a good opportunity for him, for his family as well. We had a good chat about it and I think sometimes the time is right for both parties.

“I think he’s been a really good servant to the club, but the time was right for him and maybe for the club as well, and now it’s an opportunity for us to bring someone else in.”

Writer’s View

At face value, Scarr’s departure seems unusual as he was a stalwart at Plymouth. Last season alone, he made 28 Championship appearances and captained his former side during their 3-2 loss against Ipswich, as recorded by Transfermarkt. He was an important figure at the club and could have been someone for Rooney to rely upon.

However, Rooney seemingly wants to bring in new personnel for the upcoming campaign, leaving Scarr surplus to requirements. Both parties come across well in handling the transfer situation. There was all-round positivity about Scarr’s ability to contribute in League One with Wrexham, and for Rooney to look at new centre-back options with Plymouth.
