Sheffield United are looking to piece together a rather sparse squad this summer and are eyeing up another Premier League outcast to improve their midfield department.
The Blades kick off the campaign at Deepdale against Preston North End in just over two weeks and Chris Wilder’s squad is beginning to show some signs of life after being decimated at the turn of July when 10 players left the club as free agents, including captain John Egan, first-choice goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and rising stars Daniel Jebbison and Cameron Archer.
Nevertheless, the South Yorkshire outfit have completed some solid transfer business as Wilder prepares for a promotion push once more this season. Callum O’Hare was brought in on a free from Coventry City and has been impressing supporters during pre-season, while the club also secured the services of prolific Championship goalscorer Kieffer Moore. A reported £2 million fee was paid to Premier League side Bournemouth for the 6’5″ Welshman.
Furthermore, Jamie Shackleton arrived at Bramall Lane as a free agent following his departure from Leeds United, while Wilder looked to replace Max Lowe on the left side of the defence with the signing of Sam McCallum from Norwich City, although it looks as though the Blades are set to win the race for Peterborough United‘s Harrison Burrows too, having agreed a £3 million price for the Posh skipper.
However, Sheffield United are showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market as the manager is keen to continue strengthening his squad before the campaign commences. The latest name on his list of targets appears to be Lewis O’Brien.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke has issued an update on the midfielder’s uncertain future at Nottingham Forest on X, formerly Twitter, revealing that the Tricky Trees are currently weighing up loan offers from Sheffield United, fellow recently-relegated Championship side Burnley and MLS outfit LA Galaxy and that a decision is expected soon.

Signing O’Brien makes a lot of sense for Sheffield United right now. He adds further depth to their midfield, which is important if and when Vinicius Souza leaves the club, while also bringing a lot of experience to the team.
The 25-year-old has made 13 appearances in the Premier League in his career so far but has featured 148 times in the Championship and was a key part of Huddersfield Town‘s squad under Carlos Corberan when the Terriers reached the play-off final before missing out to Nottingham Forest. This wouldn’t be a ground-breaking signing for the Blades but it adds more quality and depth to the squad which has been a key theme of this transfer window for the club.
