Sheffield Wednesday Joined By Championship Rivals In Pursuit Of £1 Million-Rated Ace

Derby County and Preston North End have both been reported to be in the race for Rangers winger Scott Wright, according to journalist Darren Witcoop on Twitter (X).

Wright looks destined to be leaving Ibrox this summer, with the squad going under somewhat of an overhaul under manager Philippe Clement. With 23 appearances in the Scottish Premiership last term, and only eight of those being starts, it is clear that Wright is down the pecking order in his position.

A slight drop in production has been seen over the last two seasons with the 26-year-old only putting up two goals in the SPFL last term. As he gradually falls out of Clement’s plans, perhaps a move this summer could indeed work out well for him.

With his contract with the Gers up next summer, now could indeed be the time for him to move on and it could be considered the best time as well, with his current club also getting a fee.

There is plenty of interest from the Championship for the Scotsman, with Sheffield Wednesday reportedly holding a long-standing interest.

After a resurgence under Danny Rohl last term, there is plenty of positivity surrounding the club currently and there’s a lot to like about their transfer business so far. Despite potentially having a bit to prove, Wright could excel in new surroundings and he could be a decent acquisition.

However the Yorkshire-based side are not the only ones displaying an interest, with Darren Witcoop also revealing that both Preston and Derby, as well as teams oversees, all monitoring Wright’s current situation.

Having exclusively played all of his football in his native country, perhaps a change of scenery could well spark improvement in the forward. He may well feel as if he has a bit to prove after a couple of slightly weaker seasons, and could come back stronger this term.

Valued by Transfermarkt at around the £1 million mark, a significant fee is therefore required to gain his services. Then again, having struggled lately as well as only having a year left on his contract, Wright could go for a bit less.

Writer’s View

The winger has been a target for Sheffield Wednesday for a while now but they are perhaps happy to miss out here. Given a significant approach is yet to be made, as well as other players being signed recently in a similar position, maybe his destination will not be Hillsborough.

Preston and Derby could both be good fits for the 26-year-old and he may well be deployed as a rotational asset. On his day he can be a top class player, Wright has just failed to show that on a consistent enough basis over the last couple of seasons. He is far from the finished product just yet though.
