Sheffield Wednesday appear to be edging closer to the signing of Rangers winger Scott Wright after reports emerged that a contract offer has been placed on the table.
The 26-year-old has one year remaining on his current deal at Ibrox, although news of the Owls’ interest emerged last week. It was claimed by The Fourth Official that Danny Rohl had identified the Scotsman as a potential target as he looks to further bolster his attacking options.
Wednesday are keen to avoid a repeat of last season, where they survived relegation from the Championship by the skin of their teeth. Despite looking doomed for the majority of the campaign, they pulled off the great escape after picking up four wins and two draws from their final six fixtures.
They have been extremely active in the transfer window thus far as they look to build on their stunning finish. Rohl has already added seven names to his squad, including the acquisitions of Jamal Lowe, Max Lowe and Olaf Kobacki. Still, their summer business is far from over.
Wright is the latest name to be linked with a move to Hillsborough, with the manager commenting on the situation at the weekend. Speaking after the 2-0 pre-season win over Alfreton on Saturday, the German said:
“I will not speak about names because it makes no sense. This market goes so quick. We have an idea what we want to have, I have an idea of how I want to play in the new season.
“We know what we have to improve when we look back from last season and then it’s about finding the right pieces to make our squad stronger and stronger because we are very ambitious for the new season.”
According to Football Insider, the Owls have made their first move by submitting a contract offer to the former Aberdeen attacker. Wright has made 117 appearances for Rangers since his move to Glasgow in 2021, although mainly played a bit-part role last season. As such, the Scottish giants are prepared to let him depart, providing their receive a six-figure fee.
Whilst Wednesday appear to be in pole position, the report also states there is interest from a number of other clubs in the Championship, as well as League One.
Writer’s View
Sheffield Wednesday certainly mean business and Danny Rohl is building a squad capable of achieving a much higher finish than last season. The reputation that the 35-year-old has built during his short stay in England thus far has made the Owls and attractive prospect, with players keen to join the German’s revolution at Hillsborough.
Wright has endured a difficult 12 months at Ibrox, but will take inspiration from Mikey Johnston’s loan move from Celtic to West Bromwich Albion. The Republic of Ireland international revitalised his career at the Hawthorns last season, and a move to the Championship for the Rangers winger could prove to be equally rewarding.
Although there is reportedly interest from elsewhere, the Yorkshire outfit look to be constructing something special. This could put them at the head of the queue.
