Former Birmingham City midfielder David Davis has joined National League North side Kidderminster Harriers ahead of the new campaign according to the club’s official website.
With just shy of 350 appearances in the EFL, as well as a further seven in the Premier League, Davis will bring a plethora of experience with him to the Harriers. He could well be considered one of the most experienced players now in England’s sixth tier, and certainly will be in Phil Brown’s side.
Kidderminster would lose their place in the National League having finished in 22nd last season. They will however be one of the favourites and an immediate promotion could well happen under Brown. Last term would be the club’s first time in the National League since the 2015/16 season, yet despite their relegation after just one season in the fifth tier, there are a number of positives surrounding the club.
One of those is the recruitment so far this summer, with Davis not being the only player to join the Harriers today. Joining him is former Walsall forward Maz Kouhyar, who adds further experience to the attack and it looks as if they are going to be rather ambitious next term.
Despite Kouhyar being a very smart addition, it is Davis who will grab the headlines, especially due to his spell with Birmingham City. The now-33-year-old’s most consistent spell came with Blues, and he’d make just shy of 200 appearances for the club in a seven-year stay.
He’d become an integral part of the midfield between 2014 and 2018, but was gradually phased out of the squad which has then in turn seen him gradually fall down the leagues in recent years.
Spells with Shrewsbury Town and Forest Green Rovers have since followed which haven’t exactly brought a whole heap of success. Davis would spent the entirety of last season with the latter without making a single appearance, so he does have a bit to prove.
Nonetheless, now dropping down to the sixth tier, he could re-find some form and could prove to be a decent acquisition.
Writer’s View
Birmingham fans will have very fond memories of Davis, who could be described as somewhat of a rock in their midfield during the mid-to-late-2010s. He’d help Blues to a couple of decent top-half finishes during his time with the club, which seems like a long time ago now that they’ll be playing in League One next season.
Although in both a very different position and league to Birmingham, Kidderminster will also be targeting an immediate promotion this season. There’s a lot to like about their early business and manager Phil Brown also has experience of managing in the top flight and it could be considered a surprise that he is sticking with them.
If able to find his feet again, David’s could prove to be a very good signing and he could become integral to the Harriers’ midfield.
