According to a report from the Bristol Post, Bristol City are closing in on a massive coup with Republic of Ireland international Sinclair Armstrong nearing a complete transfer to the Robins from Queens Park Rangers.
Armstrong, who is valued at around £850,000 according to transfermarket, has been at Loftus Road for over four years, having joined from League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers back in 2020. The Irish striker made his Republic of Ireland debut against the Netherlands last year under Stephen Kenny and is very much one for the future.
Meanwhile in the Championship, Armstrong had his breakthrough campaign last season, with the 21-year-old being voted as QPR’s young player of the season, making 39 appearances in the team, with a tally of three goals and three assists to his name.
Armstrong is most known for his power and athleticism. Despite his subpar finishing ability, the Irishman may be the perfect solution to the Tommy Conway situation, with City’s top scorer set to depart the club following his unwillingness to sign a new deal with the Robins. The Irish striker only has a year remaining on his contract at Loftus Road himself, meaning City could potentially secure his services for a cut price, with no fee having been currently reported.
Bristol City have already made moves in the transfer market to add to their attacking options this summer but have seen a multitude of potential deals falling through with City failing to secure the services of Lassine Syanako from Auxxere and Moussa Sylla from Caen. Following the signing of Fally Mayulu from Rapid Vienna, preparations have already begun for the new season at Ashton Gate, with the majority of the Robins squad linking up in Portugal for an intense and gruelling training camp. Liam Manning had some words to share about the state of City’s current squad and it’s recent arrivals during an interview with Bristol City TV.
Ahead of the new season, Manning had words to say about the state of the current squad.
“The squads are in a good place, really pleased with the additions we’ve made and the condition the boys have come back in.”
Writer’s View
Armstrong is undoubtedly a massive coup for Bristol City, despite his less-than-stellar history in front of goal, the Irish striker has a lot of untapped potential that Manning can work with. With the youngsters’ recent stagnation at Loftus Road, a change of scenery is definitely in Sinclairs’s best interests, and Ashton Gate is certainly a good place to be for the Irishman. Due to the large contingent of Irish players already at Bristol City with Jason Knight, Mark Sykes and Max O’Leary all being prominent figures in Manning’s squad, the Irishman should feel right at home.
With Bristol City set to lose their talisman, Tommy Conway, next season may finally be the opportunity Sinclair has been waiting for to play in the Championship as a starter. Despite recent failures and departures, there is still plenty for Bristol City fans to get excited about ahead of next season.
