Former Millwall Man Joins Fellow London Club

Ex-Millwall defender Hayden Muller is on the move again, joining National League outfit Sutton United from Dundalk.

After a strong showing in the League of Ireland, where he’d make 16 appearances this season, Muller has made the switch back to England to link up with former Millwall legend Steve Morison, who now manages the U’s.

It’s fair to say that there has been a pretty significant overhaul at Gander Green Lane so far this summer and Sutton can already put out an eleven of just new signings. However, they have been rather smart with their business so far this window and there’s no reason as to why they cannot gain an immediate promotion back to the EFL.

The U’s would just fall short after making a late bid for survival last season. Despite losing just one of their last eight league matches, it was too little too late for Morison’s side but the manner in which they ended the season did at least offer some hope for the forthcoming year.

It will be Morison’s first summer transfer window in charge of the South London outfit, and he is transforming the squad in which he inherited from Matt Gray. He didn’t exactly have much time during the January window to bring in the players he wanted, but is making up for lost time now, with there being an ongoing overhaul at the club.

Having previously been a coach at Millwall’s academy, whilst Muller was within the ranks, it can be assumed that the relationship between the two had a significant impact on the transfer.

The defender would in fact make three Championship appearances, all of those off of the bench, for the Lions but he’d struggle to ever have a significant impact in the senior side at The Den. He’d demonstrate potential during a loan spell with St. Johnstone in the first half of the 2021/22 season but would struggle to make any impact when returning to his parent club.

As a result, he’d move to Dundalk in the January of 2023 and has had a decent season-and-a-half with the club, gaining essential senior experience in Ireland’s top flight.

Hailing from Croydon, Muller should have no problem at settling into his new environment and the 22-year-old could well be a key figure in Morison’s plans next season.

Writer’s View

Although it may not have worked out for Muller at the Den, he has gone on to have some success in the League of Ireland and at 22, still retains potential. It looks to be yet another smart signing by Steve Morison, who will be targeting an immediate promotion back to the Football League.

Although there is an argument that Sutton may be lacking experience in some areas, it seems as if there is a long-term plan building at the club. Expect Muller to be a key part of their future, and he, as well as the club, could go onto better things in the next couple of years.
