Notts County Star Set For Top Flight Move

Notts County captain Kyle Cameron is closing in on a move to Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The 27-year-old has been an ever-present for the Magpies since joining from Torquay United in 2021. He played a key role in their promotion from the National League in 2023, which earned the defender a new two-year deal.

After four seasons outside the top four divisions, County took to life in League Two in spectacular fashion. Some stunning early season form saw them top the table throughout September, but form began to tail off soon after. The departure of manager Luke Williams to Swansea City in January further upset the dynamic of the team, with a disappointing second half of the campaign eventually seeing them secure a 14th-placed finish.

It’s already been a busy summer at Meadow Lane. Manager Stuart Maynard has been busy recruiting, with three defenders having arrived through the door. Jacob Bedeau and Matty Platt have joined the Nottinghamshire-based side from League Two rivals Morecambe and Bradford City respectively, whilst the experienced Rod McDonald made the switch from Harrogate Town.

This appears to have paved the way for Cameron to exit the club, with a move to Scotland on the agenda. St Johnstone are said to be in pole position to sign the former Scotland youth international, who is capable of operating at both centre-back and left-back. The transfer looks to be in its final stages and a contract between the two parties having been drawn up.

The former Newcastle United youth prospect isn’t likely to be the last big name exit this summer. Striker Macauley Langstaff has been linked with a transfer to the Championship, where Millwall are rumoured to be leading the chase. Former boss Williams has also been linked with a reunion at Swansea.

This seems to be a transfer which Notts County have been preparing for, with an array of defensive signings already made this summer. Nonetheless, Cameron has been a mainstay in the Magpies’ team for three years and his departure will be a blow. Losing their captain will mean the reset button will have to be pressed as they look to rebuild the nucleus of their side.

Maynard is hoping to improve on the club’s mid-table finish next season and any signings will have been made with that in mind. Their summer business has been good so far and the arrivals in defence are more than capable of operating at this level. The next step will be preparing for the likely departure of Langstaff.
