The Top Five Best Preston North End Player Chants – Opinion

Preston North End have seen a fair share of ‘cult heros’ at Deepdale over the years. This appreciation has been exemplified by some quality individual chants.

To fully understand each individual’s glorious representation, a deeper dive into their respective North End exploits is needed. It must be quite something to hear your name blaring from the home or travelling supporters, while wearing the club’s colours.

Football fans are known for crafting creative chants to spur their team on, and it’s another significant contribution to the atmosphere that makes the sport so special. Here are some of the greatest songs to have been implemented into the Lancashire side’s fan base in the modern era.

5. “Riis Will Tear You Apart, Again” – Emil Riis

To the tune of: Love Will Tear Us Apart Again by Joy Division

“Riis, Riis will tear you apart, again…

Riis, Riis will tear you apart again.”

This one is simple, but very effective in spurring the Danish favourite on. The sheer quality of sound, when this is echoed around the stadium, is very special. It is a chant that has been recycled many times, and nearly all EFL clubs must have one similar; that doesn’t detract from its impact whatsoever.

Riis joined PNE in October 2020, and the 26-year-old has shown glimpses of real talent. However, despite playing 136 games for the Lilywhites, the Dane’s tenure at North End has been hampered by injuries. Nevertheless, with a fitting name, this chant has been continuously performed by his club’s supporters whenever Riis is involved in a goal – sometimes while warming up too.

4. “50 Grand, 50 Grand…” – Daniel Johnson

To the tune of: Give Me Oil In My Lamp (Sing Hosanna)

“50 Grand, 50 Grand, Daniel Johnson,

50 Grand, 50 Grand, I’ll say…

50 Grand, 50 Grand, Daniel Johnson,

Playing football the Preston way…”

The former North End captain was a fantastic servant to the Championship club for a long time, following his arrival from Aston Villa in 2015. The fee in question was, you guessed it, £50,000; this signing is still considered as an absolute steal for the Lancashire side.

Johnson, who is a Jamaican international, featured 336 times in all competitions for the Lilywhites and netted 57 times before an eventual move to Stoke City last summer on a free. As a set piece specialist, specifically from the penalty spot, the 31-year-old enjoyed plenty of repetitions of this chant during his Deepdale stay.

3. “Oh He Is So Wonderful…” – Scott Sinclair

To the tune of: N/A (Celtic fan base original)

“Oh Scotty Sinclair, oh he is so wonderful,

When he scores a goal, oh it’s beautiful, magical…

When he runs down the wing he’s fast as lightning,

It’s frightening and he makes all the ‘Whites sing…”

First and foremost, a great deal of credit should go to the Celtic fanbase for creating this gem of a chant. Although, the Preston faithful were more than happy to incorporate it into their mid-match routine. Despite not necessarily living up to the hype that was promised, Sinclair’s song brought great excitement during his spell in Lancashire.

The former Manchester City prospect is now plying his trade at Bristol Rovers in League One. The 35-year-old scored 14 goals in 85 appearances for Preston, but this elite tune was belted on far more occasions than when Sinclair hit the back of the net.

2. “Our Striker From Montenegro” – Milutin Osmajic

To the tune of: Magic by Pilot

“Os-magic, You Know…

Our striker from Montenegro.

Os-magic, You Know…

Our striker from Montenegro.”

The newest entry into this top five, is Preston’s number 28, Osmajic. The 24-year-old signed at the start of last season for a club record fee of £2.1 million and was tipped to bolster Ryan Lowe’s side’s attacking threat. The Montenegrin’s form has been hit and miss over the course of the season, but an impressive hat-trick against Huddersfield Town offers plenty of insight into some future development.

In terms of the transfer process, with complications of a work permit and travel convenience, Osmajic’s signature was achieved a long time before he made his Preston debut. Fans were very eager to show off the song, prior to the Montenegro international’s arrival in Lancashire, and this was displayed monumentally pre-game away at Stoke City – with fans filling the visiting stand with this tune.

The name is just perfect for this chant. It was written in the stars. Preston fans will be eager to see more from their new record signing as life in the Championship continues for another year.

1. “Don’t Take Mawene Away” – Youl Mawene

To the tune of: You Are My Sunshine by Jimmie Davis

“Youl Mawene, Youl Mawene…

You make me happy when skies are grey.

You’ve never noticed how much I love you…

So please don’t take Mawene away…”

Lyrically, this claims top spot any day of the week considering the roster it’s being selected from. The thought of a player chant being passed down to the next generation of family talent is joyous and very sentimental for all involved in the community.

A six-year spell saw Mawene become a fan favourite in a North End shirt. The former Fleetwood Town defender joined Preston in 2004 and left a great legacy before his move to Greek side, Panserraikos in 2010. This chant symbolised the adoration the Frenchman received from the Championship side’s fans.

The 44-year-old now has two sons working their own way up the PNE ranks, in Theo and Noah Mawene. Noah has already made a couple of starts for the Lilywhites, while Theo has seen some limited playing time from the bench. Fans will be optimistic of a repeat in the previous fortune that encompasses the surname.
