Despite only spending the first half of the season on loan with Peterborough United, Peter Kioso became a firm fan favourite at London Road and excelled during his stay.
Having not been in former Rotherham United manager Matt Taylor’s plans, the right-back was allowed to join Posh on loan at the start of the season. He’d end up making 24 appearances in the third tier prior to his recall in January and even became the club’s captain shortly into his stay.
For a loan player to be made the captain of the club emphasises both quality and leadership characteristics, something that Kioso has bucketfuls of. After returning to the Millers, he’d make 12 appearances in the Championship, yet he still doesn’t exactly seem settled at the club.
That is despite new manager Steve Evans wanting to keep ahold of the Irishman, with the club set to be playing in League One next term following their 24th placed finish. As a result of their relegation, Kioso has been heavily linked with a move away from the Millers, with Peterborough united reportedly holding an interest.
However, it was reported earlier in the week by the Peterborough Telegraph that the club were no longer in for the defender, with Rotherham unlikely to sell to what can be considered a direct League One rival. Furthering that, Kioso is more than good enough to be playing in the Championship.
He may well be doing just that, with a move back to the second tier looking increasingly likely. It has today been revealed by the Rotherham Advertiser that the club have received two offers upwards of £600,000 to £700,000 for the Irishman, which may well be enough to tempt them into selling.
These offers are now being considered by the club, with manager Steve Evans stating to the same news outlet that these talks are ongoing with the board.
“There has been good interest in Peter from Championship level. There are a couple of clubs who have made offers and they are now sitting with the board for consideration.
“The kid wants to play Championship football and he is most likely going to be granted his opportunity, but I can’t second guess what our chairman and board are going to say to the offers that are made.”
“In the next few days I would expect him to be moving on if the board deem those offers to be acceptable.”
Writer’s View
It comes as no surprise to see Kioso likely making a move to the Championship and ever since he was loaned out to Peterborough, it seems as if he’s fallen out with Rotherham. He was more than happy with Posh and being recalled could’ve hindered his growth and a move elsewhere seems best for both parties.
It’s a substantial loss for the Millers as they test the waters of League One again but then again, they’re receiving a rather substantial fee for a player who wasn’t exactly in the plans last season.
As much as Peterborough fans will want the right-back to return to them in League One, the offers on the table currently are probably out of their range, with the defender destined to play in the Championship.
