Charlton Athletic Display Interest In International Goalkeeper

Charlton Atheltic have shown an interest in Sheffield United goalkeeper Adam Davies, according to the South London News.

The 31-year-old Welsh international has made five appearances for his country, including a 45 minute appearance on Thursday evening in a 0-0 draw with the minnows Gibraltar. Davies was withdrawn at half-time by manager Rob Page, being replaced between the sticks by Tom King.

His contract expires at the end of this month with the Blades and he may want first team football to put forward his claim for his country’s number one spot.

The Addicks are hoping to make the most of the uncertainty around a possible takeover at the South Yorkshire club, who were relegated back to the Championship last month.

Davies’s last appearance for United came in the EFL Cup back in August 2023 against Lincoln City, which the Imps won 3-2 on penalties. He has since been named on the bench numerous times but is out of contract this summer, which has piqued Charlton’s interest. In the 2022/23 he did appear seven times in the Championship, getting two clean sheets but it seems as if his future does not lie with the club.

He has over 200 EFL appearances to his name, the majority og those coming in the Championship. Although he would be a decent addition for the Addicks, they do already have both Harry Isted and Ashley Maynard-Brewer within their ranks and under contract for next season. That doesn’t appear to have put Nathan Jones off however.

One of those two names will likely leave if the club were to bring in Davies and perhaps a plan is already in place. Deserving of a starting spot, it could be a good move for the Welshman.

With two goalkeepers signed up at the London club as well as the club supposedly showing an interest in Cambridge United ‘keeper Will Mannion, this one could just be gossip. However if Isted or Maynard-Brewer were to move on then it could well happen and he would be a good addition.

One thing is for sure, with Davies’s experience somebody will be getting a very good goalkeeper so it’s no surprise to see clubs approaching him. Charlton will be targeting at the very least a play-off berth next term after a lacklustre 2023/24 season and adding the goalkeeper to their ranks could help them to that.
