Southampton Suffer Blow In Transfer Pursuit

Southampton‘s hopes of landing loanee Flynn Downes on a permanent basis have taken a blow after news emerged that new West Ham United boss Julen Lopetegui is keen to retain his services.

The midfielder joined the Saints on a season-long loan deal last summer, just one year after signing for David Moyes’ team from Swansea City. The Hammers paid £12 million to secure the transfer, with the former Ipswich Town man penning a five-year deal.

He made 35 appearances for the Premier League outfit in his debut campaign, although just 21 of those came in the league. Having played a bit-part role, the decision was made to allow the player to move on temporarily in search of regular first team football.

Fresh from their relegation to the Championship, Southampton came calling. Manager Russell Martin was keen to add talent to his squad that had experience in the second tier, and Downes certainly fit that bill.

The 25-year-old has made 33 league appearances but has more than tripled his time on the pitch compared to last season. His performances have aided the Hampshire side’s promotion bid, where they will kick off their play-off campaign against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Speaking earlier this week, Martin was full of praise for the loanee:

“Flynn, yeah, I told you before I think he’s the best in the league,” he said, via the Daily Echo.

“This team has missed him so much when he hasn’t played. We haven’t been quite able to replace him when he has not played.”

It was reported last week that West Ham were willing to listen to offers this summer. This could now change following the news that David Moyes will leave the club at the end of the season. According to The Standard, incoming boss Lopetegui will be given a fresh opportunity to show his worth in pre-season. However, it is also claimed that Southampton are likely to make a permanent bid should they secure promotion through the play-offs.

Despite the change of personnel at the top at West Ham, it is still likely that Downes departs East London this summer. Lopetegui will want to give everyone a fair crack of the whip, although it is difficult to see how the midfielder can secure a regular starting berth.

Southampton will be keen to bring him back to St Mary’s, regardless of whether they are promoted or not. However, a permanent deal would surely hinge on a place in the Premier League. The Hammers may have to play fair when it comes to a fee, and it would be a surprise if they manage to recoup all of the £12 million they paid Swansea in 2022.
