The only game in the Championship on Tuesday night sees Coventry City host Ipswich Town, and it’s fair to say that there is plenty riding on it.
Although promotion would not quite be mathematically possible with a win, Ipswich can take a huge step in their fight for automatic promotion if they are able to come out on top. Three points , or even a draw, would see them go into the final day with their destiny in their hands.
Despite sitting in third currently, The Tractor Boys can leapfrog Leeds United if they are able to get anything from the game. Significantly, this is also their game in hand over Daniel Farke’s men and if able to make it count, then they’ll be in a very strong position come the final day of the season.
Ipswich aren’t however in the best of form and are in fact winless in their last four. Three of those have been draws but they seem to be struggling to get over the line. This is however quite the opportunity to get three points as Coventry themselves find themselves in a similar vein of form.
Mark Robins’ men now have nothing to play for with three defeats in their last four games eliminating them from play-off contention. They will however want to stand in Ipswich’s way tonight, as well as preserve their spot in the top ten, in what could be argued as another good season for the club.
Here’s how two of The Real EFL’s writing team see the game panning out…
“Bar potentially the final day of the season, I don’t quite think there could be a bigger game for Ipswich Town this year. This could well be the game which sees them move back into the top two and in turn have the power in their hands entering the final day.
“Not everything has gone to plan in recent weeks but some positives can be taken from their three consecutive draws. They looked very dangerous against Hull City at the weekend and this looks on paper to be a slightly easier task.
“Given Coventry have nothing to play for in this one, I think Ipswich have the advantage and it could be their night. The Sky Blues are by no means a push over, far from it, yet they might be tired from their busy recent schedule.
“Everything points to an Ipswich win here, which would make the final day of the season very interesting.”
Coventry City 1-3 Ipswich Town
“The task at hand for Ipswich Town is simple, they need to earn four points in two games, starting tonight. Their form coming into this one has certainly been shaky. having not won any of their last four as the pressure of the run-in has started to take over, however, this game must be seen as a golden opportunity to ensure all they need to do on the final day of the season is match Leeds’s result.
“Coventry City on the other hand now have little to play for other than pride. Their loss to Hull last week and draw to Blackburn on Saturday confirmed that a second successive play-off campaign would not be happening. Although, Mark Robins is not the sort of manager to let his side play as though they are ‘on the beach’, but instead they will endeavour to end the season in style. The only major point that goes against them is the sheer amount of football they have already played over the course of the year.
“I feel Ipswich will come into this more fired up than their opposition, but the home side will not make this easy. Therefore, a draw seems the logical prediction.”
