Former Derby County Man Looking To Spoil Promotion Party

Former Derby County player and current Carlisle United manager Paul Simpson has insisted that he wants to spoil Derby’s promotion party on Saturday when the two sides meet at Pride Park.

The Cumbrians have nothing on the line having been relegated three weeks ago with four games left to be played, nonetheless Simpson is still wanting to finish the season with some pride as they enter the final day.

As for Derby, plenty is on the line with automatic promotion very much in their hands. A point would be enough to book their place in the Championship next season, and even if they were to lose to Carlisle they could still gain promotion if other results go their way.

With Peterborough United losing to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night, only Bolton Wanderers can now catch the Rams. Significantly, Bolton and Peterborough face off on the final day which further plays into Derby’s hands.

Paul Warne’s side theoretically have the easiest possible match-up on the final day of the season hosting the bottom side who have just seven wins to their name all season. Complacency cannot set in however and Carlisle have caused an upset or two this season.

Despite Simpson making over 180 appearances for the Rams as well as serving as Steve McClaren’s assistant during his time with the club, the former player has insisted that he expects his players to leave everything out there on Saturday.

Speaking to the News & Star ahead of the final day clash, the former Ram would say:

“I just hope the players rise to the occasion. When you dream of being a footballer you don’t dream of one man and his dog watching you – you dream about playing in packed houses, proper football stadiums, and Pride Park is a proper football stadium.

“They’ve got everything to play for. We’re going there to try and spoil it for them and I hope we can do ourselves justice – whoever is fit and selected to play has to go and prepare to stand up and be counted.”

Now unbeaten in their last five, Paul Warne will certainly fancy his sides’ chances on Saturday in front of what will be a packed-out Pride Park. He’ll be telling the players to stay professional knowing what’s on the line and entering the game with the right mindset will greatly help them.

Knowing that they could be just 90 minutes away from playing in the Championship should help the players get over the line and any sort of points would allow them to do just that.

Writer’s View

Despite being a former player, it is no surprise to see Simpson wanting to spoil the party. It’s been an extremely tough year for both him and Carlisle but a win on the final day would give some hope for next season.

Derby are however overwhelming favourites and should possess the class to get the job done. According to many, they’ll be back where they belong if able to achieve promotion and it’s a rather exciting time at the club. Paul Warne may have had his critics at some parts of the season but there’s no arguing his potential if able to lead the Rams to the Championship and they sit in a very strong position going into the final day.
