Leeds United have confirmed that Stuart Dallas has announced his retirement from football, following a two-year absence since his femoral fracture in April 2022.
The Northern Irishman has made 266 appearances in all competitions for the West Yorkshire side and scored 28 goals in that time – a few of which proved to be of utmost importance. This also means Dallas played his final game in Leeds’ colours back in 2022, against Manchester City in the Premier League, before suffering his unfortunate injury.
The ex-Brentford man has resiliently endured two years of recovery and rehabilitation work but has sadly left him unable to continue his career. His versatility of being able to adapt to multiple roles in defence, midfield, and attack made him one of the most important players at Elland Road.

Throughout Dallas’ career, he has thrived in many leagues and epitomised what it means to be a leader on the pitch. Starting his career in his home country at Crusaders, the defender was poached by Brentford in 2012 where a one-year loan spell to Northampton Town aided his development enough to land Dallas an important role in the Bees’ promotion to League One when he returned the following season.
Leeds United saw his potential and snapped him up in August 2015. He proved to be a key figure in their search for a Premier League return and was equally as important when they eventually did under Marcelo Bielsa.
Appreciation for the Leeds legend would be a severe understatement, with emotional fans taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share their favourite moments of their cult hero’s time at Elland Road. The 32-year-old certainly had some memorable moments. His strike against Charlton Athletic on the final day of their Championship-winning season sealed promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years. Dallas also appeared in every single top-flight game for the Whites in the 2020/21 season which saw his side land a ninth-place finish.

Arguably his most impressive performance came in the same term against the eventual league winners, Manchester City, where the Northern Ireland international scored a stunning goal in stoppage time to not only complete a wonderful brace but to earn his side all three points.
In Dallas’ emotional open letter to the Leeds United faithful, he stated:
“As a young boy growing up in Cookstown, Northern Ireland, all I ever wanted was to play professional football and I will be eternally grateful that for me, that dream came true.
I’ve been fortunate to work with some outstanding managers, but two in particular I want to pay special thanks to are Marcelo Bielsa and Michael O’Neill. Premier League football seemed a million miles away at times, but he [Bielsa] made this all possible.
My final thanks must go to you, the Leeds United fans. Your passion and love for this team and city is what makes Leeds so special. You really are the 12th man. As the famous anthem goes, “we’ve been through it all together and we’ve had our ups and downs”. Leeds United is now well and truly in my blood.
Leeds is a place I will call home forever.”

Dallas will go down as a true hero for the Whites, for his hard work on and off the pitch to transform the club into one of Premier League recognition again. His open letter epitomises what a brilliant player and human the Northern Irishman is.
No doubt his performances for Northern Ireland and Leeds will leave fans reminiscent of his last-minute goals and all-round versatility and reliability. It’s an emotional day for the West Yorkshire side, but an important moment for the 32-year-old to look back on happy memories and be at peace with this decision.
