Charlton Athletic Defender Attracting European Interest

Charlton Athletic defender Terell Thomas is attracting interest from Hungarian top-flight side Fehervar, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 28-year-old is in the final months of his existing contract, having penned a one-year extension last summer. He has been an ever-present in the Addicks’ side this season and has started every game since Nathan Jones was appointed manager in February.

Thomas is currently in his second spell at The Valley, having emerged through their academy as a youngster. However, he failed to break into the first team and joined Wigan Athletic in 2017. Spells at several other EFL clubs followed, including AFC Wimbledon and Crewe Alexandra, before he rejoined his boyhood team in 2022.

The St Lucia international has racked up 54 appearances in all competitions since, although a move to Hungary could prove tempting. Fehervar are currently third in NB I and chasing down a Europa League spot. They do hold a six point advantage over fourth-placed Debrecen, putting them in the driving seat to secure European football next season.

It isn’t the first time that the three-time Hungarian champions have targeted Charlton. They agreed a deal for midfielder and club captain George Dobson in February, although an immediate transfer fell through. However, the 26-year-old has already agreed to make the move to the continent at the end of the season.

Speaking at the time, the club’s managing director Attila Balogh addressed the situation, saying:

“This time there was accurate information from our journalistic colleagues about this transfer, until Sunday it seemed that George Dobson could join us before the February 14th transfer window deadline. However, his current club backed out at the last minute, despite the parties having agreed all the terms in writing, with the midfielder set to move to our club and the organising of the usual medical examinations and paperwork.

“We regret that this has happened, we are waiting for George during the summer pre-season, and we believe that we have managed to strengthen our midfield with Dávid Sigér in such a way that we can look forward to the rest of the season with confidence”

Charlton briefly flirted with relegation to League Two this season before the departure of Michael Appleton. Jones has steadied the ship and they currently sit 16th in League One ahead of the Easter double-header.

With Fehervar having already raided Charlton, this is an easy link to make. Whereas there might be some degree of truth to it, this could be agent talk in order to force contract negotiations to take place before the end of the season.

That said, Dobson is likely to have given his recommendations to his new club and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Thomas has been named as a player that could be interested in joining his teammate in Hungary. One to keep a tentative eye on.
