£430K-Rated Wigan Athletic Star Linked With Premier League Move

Wigan Athletic face a difficult task to keep hold of Charlie Hughes this summer as the central defender is being heavily linked with a move to the Premier League and even the Championship, according to reports.

The academy product has had a tremendous season at the DW Stadium under Shaun Maloney, making 44 appearances for the Latics in all competitions, including 36 from a possible 39 in League One, while scoring three goals and recording one assist.

Maloney’s side have had an impressive campaign so far and would be sitting in tenth place above Leyton Orient with a chance of reaching the play-offs had the Greater Manchester club not been docked eight points last summer after failing to meet an EFL funding deadline.

The squad is still quite young and has a number of players who have been eyed by teams in the Championship and the Premier League, including goalkeeper Sam Tickle and centre-back Hughes.

According to a new report from iNews, UEFA Europa Conference League champions West Ham United have registered interest in the Wigan Athletic defender, claiming that the Hammers are “firm admirers” of Hughes.

Furthermore, the outlet is reporting that Brentford are also in the running for the 20-year-old’s signature who still has a contract with Wigan until 2028. The Bees are said to be extensively scouting the England U20s international.

Speaking in a recent interview with the ‘i’ paper, Hughes stated that he just wants to let his “football do the talking” amid speculation about his future with the Latics [quotes via Wigan Today]:

“I’m trying to improve every day, to train well and play well and be the best version of myself. I just want to let my football do the talking.”

Hughes is a top defender and is one of the best centre-backs in League One which has meant his market value has soared to £430,000, as per Transfermarkt. However, since he still has four years remaining on his deal, Wigan Athletic can expect to receive a much higher fee.

West Ham are in the market for a new central defender and even came close to signing Peterborough United star Ronnie Edwards during the summer window. Perhaps David Moyes now sees Hughes as a more viable purchase.
