Young Wigan Athletic Star Makes Decision On Future

Wigan Athletic have announced via club media that Baba Adeeko has signed a new three-year-deal with the club, keeping him at the DW Stadium until the summer of 2027.

One of the shining lights in the Wigan side this season, Adeeko plays with far more confidence than you’d expect from a player of his age. Despite being just 20, he has already established himself as one of the key players in Shaun Maloney’s side.

In fact, the youngster has been ever-present in the midfield for the entirety of the season, making 31 appearances in League One, 27 of those being starts. It’s been a real breakout year for the Irishman, who looks set to be a key part of the future plans at the club.

Adeeko is a product of Wigan’s academy and has been with the them since he was a 12-year-old. Having played for various age groups for the Latics in recent years, the 20-year-old has an extremely bright future ahead of him.

His performances are not going unnoticed and the young midfielder has been capped multiple times by the Republic of Ireland under-21s in recent months after impressing for Wigan. He looks destined to play for his senior national side in the future and it is more ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

With an extremely exciting future ahead of him, Adeeko has today committed to the club which gave him an opportunity, for the next three years. It’s a huge positive for the League One side, who no doubt have a very valuable asset on their hands in years to come.

Speaking to club media about his contract extension, Baba Adeeko said:

“I am very delighted to extend my stay here. I cannot wait to see what the future holds.”

Manager Shaun Maloney would go onto add:

“Baba’s long-term contract is an extremely positive statement from the football club. He has made his first-team breakthrough this season and has been a really important player for us both in and out of possession.

“He is a young player with fantastic potential, and I’m convinced if he continues to work hard, he will have a successful career with us here at Wigan Athletic.”

Given their points deduction, not much was expected of Wigan this season yet they have performed incredibly well and currently sit 13th in the league. Adeeko’s performances have played a huge part in that, and the youngster has held down a very important role, playing in front of the backline.

The sky does truly seem to be the limit for the 20-year-old and Wigan have a very exciting player on their hands. It will be interesting to see how next season unfolds on a level playing field for both the club as well as the player.
