Peterborough United Complete Signing Of Experienced Keeper

Peterborough United have completed the signing of 31-year-old goalkeeper Jed Steer on a deal until the end of the season, the club have officially confirmed.

The move comes after Steer joined Posh earlier in the season to provide cover for injured goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic.

A nomadic player, Steer has never made more than 38 appearances for a club. He started his career at Norwich before going out on loan to Cambridge United and Yeovil.

He was signed by Aston Villa for an initial £450,000 in a compensation payment to Norwich City in July 2013 and he made 19 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, three of which were in the Premier League. Those 19 appearances for Villa were spread over a long period of time as Steer went out on loan to multiple EFL sides such as Charlton Athletic and Luton Town.

His only full season as a number-one goalkeeper came in the 2015/16 season when he made 38 league appearances for Huddersfield Town and kept nine clean sheets.

Steer had been without a club since the summer when Posh recruited him as emergency cover at the start of January. He made four appearances for Darren Ferguson’s side before departing after his short-term deal expired.

Peterborough United currently find themselves embroiled in a close title race in League One. They are sitting in third place, as of the time of writing, and are four points off league leaders Portsmouth with two games in hand.

Peterborough’s model for growth often leads to them signing young players in key positions, the goalkeeper being one of them, and it has, on occasion, led to them achieving unjust results due to individual errors which can be attributed to inexperience.

Steer will not only be an experienced head on the pitch, but he will also bring a lot to the dressing room and Bilokapic and Fynn Talley will be able to learn a lot from him on the training ground which should strengthen Posh’s defensive unit overall.
