Peterborough United are set to challenge League One rivals Oxford United and Bristol Rovers in the race to sign Brentford winger Michael Olakigbe, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.
The Cambridgeshire-based club lost ground in the race for automatic promotion at the weekend after recording a 0-0 draw with Lincoln City. Bolton Wanderers thumping win over Carlisle United saw them climb above Darren Ferguson’s team into second, whilst Derby County drew level on points with Posh with a victory over Cheltenham Town.
It was a frustrating afternoon at Sincil Bank, with the Imps nullifying Peterborough’s attacking threat throughout. It was a performance which angered the manager, who warned his team that they are in danger of getting left behind in the fight to secure a spot in the Championship next season.
Goalkeeper Jed Steer has been the only piece of business at London Road so far this month, although it was announced last night that he had decided to leave the club over a lack of assurances of regular playing time. Owner Darragh MacAnthony previously stated that he was not expecting any arrivals throughout the transfer window, although that stance may have changed following Saturday’s result.
According to Witcoop, there is now a three-way tussle to secure a six-month loan of Brentford winger Michael Olakigbe, who made his first team debut for the Bees earlier this season. Having made eight top flight appearances, he has not featured in the Premier League since the turn of the year.

A loan move has been heavily rumoured throughout the month, with Brentford keen on the 19-year-old experiencing regular first team football. Peterborough are joined by Oxford United and Bristol Rovers in the pursuit.
Ferguson will lead his side into the EFL Trophy quarter final tonight against AFC Wimbledon before returning to league action on Saturday with a clash against Wigan Athletic at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Although Peterborough were not expected to do any business this month, their hand may have been forced due to the four-way battle to secure automatic promotion. Bolton Wanderers appear to be the favourites due to playing less games than the rest, although Derby County are refusing to give up on the race.
Whilst Ferguson was speaking in anger on Saturday, his words did have a degree of truth and there is an argument to say that the teams in and around them have a stronger squad. Olakigbe is clearly highly rated at Brentford and he could prove to be a difference maker wherever he ends up this week.
