With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Crawley Town boss Scott Lindsey has issued an important update on the club’s plans before the January window slams shut.
The Red Devils are currently 12th in the League Two table but are still in with a shout of reaching the playoffs as the side are sitting just five points behind the final spot which is currently occupied by Notts County.
Crawley will be hoping to finally end their nine-year-long stay in England’s fourth tier but the side have made merely one signing so far since the transfer market opened when goalkeeper Ryan Sandford joined the club early in January from Dartford in the National League South.
However, the West Sussex club could be set for a busy end to the winter window as head coach Lindsey has revealed that Crawley Town are keen to bring up to three more players through the door before the 11pm deadline.
Speaking to the Sussex Express in a pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Morecambe, Lindsey said:
“I’m waiting for an update from the owners. They’ve been working extremely hard in the background, trying to put things together. But I’m still hopeful that we’ll get one or two, or if not, maybe three in the building between now and 11 o’clock tonight.”
The gaffer also revealed that he’s happy with his squad, but could do with some new arrivals to help reach the next step.
“We’ve had a few Zoom meetings with the owners and kind of looked at what we want to bring in and looked at not just the areas we want to bring in on the pitch, but also personnel targets. And then the guys are in the background are going to work, trying to make that happen.
“Whether we’ve got a big budget, small budget or an indifferent one, it’s the same work, you know. I think that the squad that we built in the summer has done extremely well. Do they need a little bit of help to have that final push? Yeah, I think they do.”
Writer’s View
When Lindsey says Crawley Town need some more additions to the squad to make that “final push”, he is presumably talking about getting into the playoffs. While the club added depth to their goalkeeping department, the arrival of Sandford is unlikely to help the side get into the top seven.
Nevertheless, it will be incredibly interesting to see who comes through the door before tonight’s deadline and if the board can get all three potential signings over the line with just a few hours remaining in the window.
