Crawley Town manager Scott Lindsey has rejected claims that he was in the frame for the Gillingham job before the appointment of Stephen Clemence earlier this week.
The Gills parted company with Neil Harris at the beginning of the month, stating that they wanted “to go in a different direction.” Although one of the pre-season favourites to secure promotion to League One, a run of three games without a win looked to be the straw that broke the camel’s back, leaving the Kent-based club languishing outside the play-off places.
Their League Two rivals Crawley currently sit in mid-table, despite being tipped for relegation. The Real EFL famously predicted the Red Devils to finish rock bottom before the start of the season, with Lindsey taking pleasure in responding after they hit the ground running in August.
With the West Sussex outfit arguably punching above their weight, it was no surprise to see their manager linked with other roles. It was claimed that the former Swindon Town boss had held two interviews with Gillingham, although it appears as if this has been refuted by the man himself. Speaking in his press conference, via Sussex World, prior to tomorrow’s FA Cup first round tie with Notts County, the 51-year-old said;
“It’s normal for there to be interest in this industry in terms of when you are doing well.
“It’s nice to be recognised for the work you are doing, but I do want to state my head was never turned at any given time and I was fully focussed on the job here and always have been. Nothing has ever changed for me, most people were probably panicking in the background and I just got on with my job and didn’t make anything of it all and never have done. That’s the end of the matter as far as I am concerned.”
Crawley are on a run of six games without a win in all competitions but will be hoping to progress in the world’s oldest domestic cup competition at Meadow Lane tomorrow.

With Crawley having enjoyed a decent start to the season, it is no surprise to see Lindsey linked with other roles within the division. However, he will feel that he still has unfinished business at the Broadfield Stadium and will be determined to prove the pre-season doubters (us!) wrong.
Whilst the upcoming two cup fixtures will provide distraction from their league antics, the manager will no doubt have one eye on next weekend’s visit of promotion hopefuls Accrington Stanley and recording an important three points.
