Mansfield Town are currently in the market for a forward this January, with the club reportedly submitting offers for three forward players in the last couple of days.
It is perhaps the position in most need of addressing for the club, before the January transfer window closes on Thursday night. Although they have by no means struggled in front of goal this season, recent performances suggest that improvements can be made.
With just six goals in their last six games, Mansfield have begun to fall behind their rivals in the fight for automatic promotion. During that same spell the club have picked up six points with only one win to their name.
That run of games also includes draws against 23rd-placed Sutton United as well as 22nd-placed Doncaster Rovers, and their performances in-front of goal have somewhat hindered the Stags from gaining all three points in both of those matches.
Despite sitting third in the league currently, Mansfield have the joint-sixth best goalscoring record in the league and given how they have statistically the best record in the league defensively, it is obvious what part of the pitch needs improvement.
However the club do seem to be working hard in order to fix that issue and it can be expected that at least one forward player will be brought in prior to the end of the window.
Speaking to club media, Stags manager Nigel Clough has today revealed his plans to address those problems, and a new face at the club could be imminent.
“Offers have gone in for three forward players at the moment.
“We’re still waiting. It’s a little bit of moving the goal posts where you think you’ve got a deal agreed last week and then somebody comes back and says ‘we want a bit more’ or changes the deal, so we’re at that stage at the moment.
“I think now, we’re in a position with the injuries that we’re picking up and everything that we probably need more than one. The chairman has been brilliant and has given us the green light to go for them.
“If we end up with two out of three or something like that [that would be good].”
“We’re in other clubs’ hands, players’ hands and agents’ hands so there’s nothing more we can do than just wait.”

Bringing in a proven goalscorer, or even multiple for that matter, could be the difference between Mansfield gaining automatic promotion or even winning the title, and being forced into the play-offs. Fans would rather the former given recent history and it would certainly make the end of the season less stressful.
It is a huge positive though just how good the club’s communication has been on the matter and a name can be expected to be unveiled in the coming days. With the best defence in the league, they may just need that tiny bit of extra quality in the forward areas to take themselves to the next level.
