Northampton Town manager Jon Brady is hoping for more arrivals at Sixfields before the end of the transfer window on Thursday night.
The Cobblers achieved promotion last season after finishing third in League Two and have arguably been one of the surprise packages of the season so far. They currently sit comfortably in the top half of the table in ninth, a position made even more impressive with the amount of injury problems they have endured throughout the campaign.
A number of first team stars have spent time on the sidelines this season and recent weeks have shown no signs of let up. Brady had eight players missing for last Saturday’s defeat against Shrewsbury Town, which was made worse in the second half when defender Aaron McGowan was forced off.
There has been two additions to the squad so far this month – both coming in the way of loan signings. Goalkeeper Louie Molden arrived from Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers whilst the manager bolstered his attacking options by bringing in Tony Springett from Norwich City.
That has taken Northampton’s temporary signings to five, which is the maximum which can be named in a matchday squad. With the transfer window set to close later this week, the 49-year-old knows that this could be a pivotal week for the club. However, he has refused to be drawn into conversations regarding any arrivals, remaining coy on the situation.
“There are a lot of things to assess over the next few days,” Brady told the Northampton Chronicle. “I don’t want to give too much away but we’ll see. There’s one player who we’re hoping will be phased back in from Saturday but, apart from that, we’re having to wait on others.”
“With how the squad is at the moment, you would like to add but we will see. There might be a little bit of hope but we’ll have to see. Between us and the recruitment team, we’ll have a look at a few things but we’ll see how things go over the next couple of days.”
The result against Shrewsbury ended a run of four games without a defeat for Northampton. Things don’t get any easier for them in the coming weeks though, and they travel to league leaders Portsmouth this weekend before hosting second-placed Bolton Wanderers the following Saturday.
Writer’s View
Having had the pleasure of watching Northampton on a couple of occasions this season, it’s no surprise to see them sitting comfortably in the top half of the table. Jon Brady has built a team that is well-drilled and difficult to break down, whilst having the ability of hurting their opposition.
Despite that, they do have a very thin squad and any more injuries could seriously hamper the remainder of the campaign. It wouldn’t be a major shock to see one or two more new faces before the end of the transfer window on Thursday.
