Sutton United Sign Exciting Young Prospect

Sutton United have announced via club media the signing of Jay Williams from Fulham on a permanent basis.

Williams is yet to make a senior appearance however has displayed some promise for the Premier League outfit’s under-21 side. Capped up to u21 level for his nation, Wales, the defender is held in high regard and seems to be a player that Sutton United’s manager Steve Morison is fond of.

Morison has been busy this window, bringing in plenty of additions to an ever-growing squad. Those additions do seem to be working, with four draws on the bounce as well as better performances on the whole.

That being said, Sutton do need to pick up a couple of wins if they are to preserve their League Two status this season. Currently sat in 23rd in the table, seven points off of safety, wins are needed in order to get themselves out of the bottom two.

Improvements have been seen since Morison took charge and he is yet to lose any of his three games in charge since taking the vacant position after Matt Gray was relieved of his duties. That first win is still eluding the former Millwall striker currently, yet one doesn’t look far away.

Sutton welcome Harrogate Town to Gander Green Lane on Tuesday night in what is a winnable fixture for the hosts. New signing Williams may just be included in the matchday squad for the League Two clash as well.

With no previous experience at a professional level, it is unlikely that Williams will be a starter for Sutton, but he will be expected to play some sort of part in the squad as he continues to develop.

Although it is a bit of an unknown just how high his ceiling is, it could be a shrewd signing by Morison which could pay off in the long run.

Writer’s View

The signing of Williams is by no means a marquee signing however Sutton are more than known for their ability to get the best out of players who have played at a lower, or in this case youth, level.

With 18 games left to be played and a seven point gap to the three teams ahead of them , Doncaster Rovers, Colchester United and Grimsby Town, a win on Tuesday night would be huge for their survival chances.

Williams may not play much of a part this season, but he could be one to watch for the future.
