Bolton Wanderers Beat Championship Opposition To Latest Signing

Bolton Wanderers have won the race to sign Liverpool youngster Calvin Ramsay on loan for the remainder of the season, according to The Daily Mail.

The right-back joined Preston North End on a season-long deal back in July but was forced to miss the opening three months of the campaign after suffering a serious knee injury. He finally made his debut for the Lilywhites in November as a second half substitute in the 4-0 defeat at Middlesbrough, before starting the next game in a 2-0 loss against QPR.

Unfortunately for the 20-year-old, he then suffered a bout of Covid which ruled him out of the subsequent fixtures and was unable to force his way back into the team upon returning to fitness.

Manager Ryan Lowe addressed the situation last month, saying:

“He (Ramsay) is available. He’s just out of the squad at the moment, because he had Covid. He’s fit and training every day, but I have got to look for players who I feel can help – coming off the bench.

“I want more attacking players and we’ve got Ali (McCann) or Browney (Alan Browne) who can fill that right-wing-back void – or even Liam Millar, swapping over to the other side. We don’t need an extra one on the bench at the moment. So yeah, he’s fit and available and he’s just got to wait for his turn. When it comes, hopefully he can take it.”

Liverpool were unwilling to wait though and opted to recall the Scotland international earlier this month with the view of sending him out on another loan before the end of the window. Championship promotion contenders Leeds United have been heavily linked with the former Aberdeen star, whilst Southampton have also been touted with an interest.

However, it appears as if a move to League One is on the cards, with The Daily Mail claiming that Bolton Wanderers have won the race to secure his signature.

The Trotters enjoy a good relationship with the Premier League leaders after their successful development of Conor Bradley last season. The 20-year-old spent the 2022/23 campaign at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, making 53 appearances in all competitions. The young defender is now a part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans and put in a Man of the Match performance in the 5-2 FA Cup win over Norwich City yesterday, pitching in with two assists.

The Merseysiders are hoping that Ramsay can enjoy a similar run at the Greater Manchester-based side, who are currently pushing to secure the League One title. Bolton are two points behind leaders Portsmouth with two games in hand and host play-off hopefuls Barnsley on Saturday.

Writer’s View

This is a signing of real intent for Bolton Wanderers and one that will be the envy of the rest of the division. Calvin Ramsay is highly regarded at Anfield, a fact made even more evident after they shelled out £6.5 million for his services from Aberdeen in 2022.

It is said that Leeds were particularly keen, so to be able to bring in a player that was touted by a club hopeful of winning promotion to the Premier League is a huge compliment to both the club and the manager. This could be a game changer for the Trotters.
