West Bromwich Albion are closing in on their first signing of the transfer window and are in advanced talks with Bristol City over the acquisition of attacker Andi Weimann, according to Bristol Live.
The Baggies currently sit fifth in the Championship as they target a play-off place this season. However, with the fight to secure a top six finish looking as if it could go down to the wire, manager Carlos Corberan is keen to add to his squad this month.
Last weekend’s 4-1 win over Aldershot Town in the FA Cup third round provided a welcome break from their league exploits, where goals have been at a premium as of late. The West Midlands side have recorded two wins from their last four Championship fixtures, scoring just twice in the process.
As a result, attacking options are high on the agenda, although they have also been linked to defensive recruits. However, it is claimed that advanced negotiations are now in place with league rivals Bristol City over the signing of the experienced Andi Weimann.
The Austrian international has been at Ashton Gate since signing from Derby County in 2018 and has scored 51 goals in 216 appearances for the Robins. He was appointed club captain in February last year but has struggled for game time at Ashton Gate since the arrival of Liam Manning as manager in November.
The 32-year-old’s latest performances have mainly come from the substitutes bench, although he scored his first goal of the season in the 4-1 win over Watford on Boxing Day.
It looks as if his stay at Bristol City is coming to an end, with it claimed that West Brom are in advanced talks over the transfer of the former Aston Villa man. The report does state that it is unclear at this stage whether the transfer would be a permanent or a temporary deal, although the attacker is in the final six months of his contract.
Weimann appeared from the bench in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with West Ham United in the FA Cup in what could be his final outing for the club.

Andi Weimann would be an interesting signing for West Brom. He is a player with bags of experience in the Championship, having made over 300 appearances in the division. Carlos Corberan may see him as a squad player, but it is a move that will appeal to the player as it represents an opportunity to get back into the Premier League.
It is claimed that his current deal at Bristol City includes an appearance clause that could trigger an automatic one-year extension if met, so the Robins may be keen to offload this month to prevent that from happening.
