Birmingham City Sack Wayne Rooney After Failing To Meet ‘Expectations’

Birmingham City have parted company with manager Wayne Rooney just three months in to his reign as boss of the West Midlands club.

The decision comes after his Birmingham side were beaten 3-0 away to promotion chasers Leeds United on Monday, continuing their five game run without a win.

Since taking over the club on October 11th, replacing popular manager John Eustace, the club has dropped from sixth to 20th in the Championship table, with Rooney only winning two of his 15 games in charge of the Blues. The club will now look to appoint their third manager of the season, in a battle to avoid being pulled in to a relegation fight.

The club released a statement on their website reading: “Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset. Therefore, the Board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the Football Club.”

“The Club’s Board and management are fully aligned and will continue to drive transformation and take bold steps to rebuild Birmingham City into the organisation its fans and community deserve.”

First team coach Carl Robinson has also left the club alongside Rooney with Chief Executive Garry Cook stating that they are “committed to doing what is necessary to bring success to St. Andrew’s.

“Unfortunately, Wayne’s time with us did not go as planned and we have decided to move in a different direction” added Cook.

Professional Development Coach Steve Spooner will take interim charge of the club whilst they search for their new manager, with Birmingham playing Championship rivals Hull City in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

It seemed a bizarre decision to many at the time that Birmingham decided to part company with John Eustace after his solid work since taking over the club, and his popularity with the fans. With the second tier club becoming the latest club to be bought by American ownership, it appeared that they wanted a manager with a bigger name to get eyes on the club and with Rooney’s managerial stint in America, it appeared a perfect match for the new owners.

However, it has turned in to a nightmare since his appointment and now the club will be looking for a new manager to get them out of a relegation fight, instead of what could have possibly been a play-off push if they stuck with Eustace.
