Former Millwall Midfielder Reveals League Two Move Has Huge Potential

Experienced defensive midfielder George Evans departed Millwall in September, dropping two divisions to partake in Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ambitious project with League Two Wrexham

Following the high-profile takeover in February 2021, the Welsh side have enjoyed a tumultuous period seeing them earn promotion back to the prestigious ‘Football League’. Accompanying the success on the field, Welcome to Wrexham was launched in 2022 to document the running of the football club, in turn brandishing an immense amount of exposure to football and Hollywood fans alike.

In recent times, Paul Mullin, Ben Tozer, James McClean and Elliot Lee have all made the sacrifice of descending down the divisions to participate in the project of guiding the oldest team in Wales to success and fame. Continuing this model, the singing of George Evans is no different.

With over 135 appearances coming in the English second tier, it can be viewed that the 28-year-olds ability is far superior than that of the fourth tier. However, the former Derby County man revealed he has ‘no shame in dropping down’ as per The Mirror.

Speaking to The Wrexham Leader regarding the move, the Manchester City graduate stated;

“I am delighted to be here, it is a fantastic football club and I feel at home. It’s a great set of lads, staff and everything about the club.”

“I’m excited to be here but I’m not taking it lightly. Hopefully I put the performances in on the pitch and make sure I stay in the team and really kick on now because I’m loving it here, and get some more wins under our belt. We will keep working hard, we won’t get ahead of ourselves.”

Phil Parkinson’s men have been in a rich vein of form as of late where they currently boast a nine-unbeaten streak in the league whilst fending off fellow high-flyers Mansfield Town in the FA Cup.

Questioned on the recent success and whether there’s an impending pressure around rightful expectations, Evans responded;

“Each game is massive for us and if we can keep the momentum building and keep the run going, hopefully it will stand us in good stead come the end of the season. We have got to make sure we are at it every game.”

Evans and his teammates travel east, as they face an out-of-form Accrington Stanley at The Wham Stadium this weekend.

Writer’s View

There’s no disputing the enticing prospects Wrexham possess under the ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney respectively, and it is appearing that The Red Dragons may be too good of an opportunity to turn down, should they come calling.

As a career, being a professional footballer is a short one, therefore it’s unsurprising successful footballer’s are choosing to continue that winning formula with a club looking to make as much noise as possible.
