Sheffield Wednesday Influential Midfield Ace Gets Green Light To Return To Action

Sheffield Wednesday have been given a huge lift ahead of this weekend’s big game against Millwall.

The Owls appealed against captain Barry Bannan’s red card during the loss at Bristol City last Saturday, and they have received news that this has been overturned, freeing the star man to play in the important game, the Yorkshire Post reported.

The card was shown because it was seen by the referee, Lewis Smith, that City’s Jason Knight was denied a clear goalscoring opportunity when he was fouled outside the box. The incident happened just after the half-hour mark, with the game goalless. Wednesday went on to a narrow 1-0 loss.

Danny Rohl, Owls boss, was very clear that two of his players were in covering positions, therefore was not a clear scoring chance.

With the evidence presented to the Football Association, they agreed and now the influential Bannan can play against the Lions.

Sheffield Wednesday are starting to turn in some decent performances under new boss Rohl, and they will look to inflict a defeat in Millwall’s new boss Joe Edwards’s first game in charge. This will also mean that the Owls could come off the bottom of the table if other results go their way.

Rohl is still having to juggle his side as injuries are hampering any real consistency in picking a starting eleven. This game though, will present a chance to impress his brand of football in front of a Hillsborough crowd for only the second time. They won the first, 1-0 against Rotherham United.

Writer’s View

It isn’t often appeals against cards are won. This one was fairly conclusive though and Sheffield Wednesday will be boosted by the news. Barry Bannan is such a big player for them and is key to Rohl’s plans. Millwall, their opponents at the weekend, are also boosted by a new manager, so this will be a game that both bosses will want to do well in. If Rohl gets another home win, he will have won the fans over, and from there the only way is up.
