Bolton Wanderers Tipped For Promotion By Rival Boss

Stevenage manager Steve Evans has admitted that he would love to see Bolton Wanderers achieve promotion to the Championship after falling to the Trotters last night.

The two clubs faced off yesterday at the Toughsheet Community Stadium but it was the hosts who came out on top in a five-goal thriller. Bolton took the lead twice in the game but Boro’s Jamie Reid always had an answer, scoring a brace to take his tally for this season to eight in League One.

This was Stevenage’s second consecutive defeat, having suffered a 3-1 loss at home to second-place Oxford United on Saturday. Evans’ side have now won merely once in five matches in England’s third tier despite starting the season well.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s win lifted Ian Evatt’s Bolton Wanderers above Stevenage in the table. The Wanderers are now sitting five points off league-leaders Portsmouth with a game in hand.

Evans was asked about Bolton after the game to which he admitted that he would love to see them get promoted to the Championship [quotes via The Bolton News]:

“I wish the club every success. We will try our best to beat them when they come and play us at the Lamex.

“But other than that, I would love to see them go and get promoted because they are a great club.”

Evans on refereeing decisions

Evans also commented on certain refereeing decisions that didn’t go Stevenage’s way including a possible second yellow offence for Jack Iredale before the half-time interval [quotes via The Bolton News]:

“I think they expect Iredale to go off just before half-time for a second yellow, he doesn’t get it, and I think they expect the challenge on (Carl) Piergianni to be punished with a red card.

“There were two or three other instances in the middle of the park but there is no point me talking anymore, I will put myself in trouble.”

Writer’s View

Bolton have been a constant work in progress under Evatt but year-on-year there is clear progression from the team and they could finally be ready for promotion this term.

Evatt’s men have been a little inconsistent early into the current campaign but are now starting to find their feet again and will be keen to replace Pompey at the summit of the table.
