Sunderland have struck a deal with French champions Paris Saint-Germain over the permanent transfer of full-back Timothée Pembélé, according to L’Equipe.
It’s been an exceptionally busy day at the Stadium of Light, with the club working on a number of deals as they look to bolster their squad in the final moments of the transfer window. It has already been claimed that Chelsea striker Mason Burstow is on the verge of a move to the North East, whilst at least three other arrivals could be confirmed before the end of the day.
The Black Cats were linked with a move for the PSG defender earlier today, with the news gathering pace over the last couple of hours. According to the French media outlet, the two sides have agreed a deal in principle and Pembélé is set to sign a long-term contract at the club.
Having represented France at various youth levels, the 20-year-old made his debut for the Parisians in 2020 and has since featured on 15 occasions, including in the Champions League. He spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at fellow Ligue 1 club Bordeaux, where he appeared 26 times, scoring three goals.
Pembélé was linked with 2022 Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt last week, with the Bundesliga outfit reportedly having had discussions with PSG over his acquisition. With that sort of pedigree, Sunderland will feel that they have pulled off a major coup, particularly because they look to have secured the potential future star on a permanent basis.

A lot can change in 24 hours. Sunderland fans would have been forgiven for waking up today full of doom and gloom thanks to Southampton’s potential double raid on the club, but could end the day with a host of quality additions to their squad.
They arguably over-performed by reaching the play-offs last season, although Mowbray will be hoping that he can now see his side kick-start their season after picking up just four points from their opening four games. Pembélé is a player who can offer something going forward, as well as shoring up the defence. This could end up being one of the signings of the summer.
