Leeds United have received a boost in their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence, with the Premier League outfit making a decision on the 23-year-old’s future, according to Nottinghamshire Live.
The Championship side’s interest in the former Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest star was revealed last week when journalist Ben Jacobs claimed that a number of second tier clubs were considering making a season-long loan offer. Leeds were named as a potential destination alongside Bristol City and Swansea City.
The Athletic revealed earlier today that the Yorkshire side had now made an approach for the player, with Sky Sports confirming the news. However, it is thought that talks are still at a very early stage and other clubs maintain their interest.
Leeds are set for a busy week in the transfer market as they look to tweak their squad ahead of a potential promotion push. Saturday’s 4-3 win over early pacesetters Ipswich Town finally kickstarted their season after two draws and a defeat in their opening three fixtures and manager Daniel Farke will be keen to build on that success this weekend against Sheffield Wednesday.
Spence is a player that has Championship pedigree after playing a key role in Forest’s promotion-winning squad two seasons ago but has struggled since his move to North London last summer. He has made just four substitute appearances for the club and spent the second half of the last campaign on loan to Ligue 1 outfit Rennes.
According to Nottinghamshire Live, Spurs have decided that the right-back will be allowed to leave the club before the transfer window closes on Friday. However, Leeds are aware of interest from elsewhere so have compiled a list of alternatives, including Burnley’s Charlie Taylor and Leicester City’s Luke Thomas.

Spence has struggled with the step up to the Premier League but is proven at Championship level and would be a shrewd acquisition. A loan move is wise, particularly because he still has four years remaining on his deal at Tottenham Hotspur. Aside from that, Leeds harbour ambitions of returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking and they are looking for players capable of playing at a higher level. Spence is an unknown entity in that respect.
That said, Daniel Farke’s primary objective is securing promotion this season and the 23-year-old has already tasted that success. That winning mentality could be just what is needed at Elland Road and the manager knows that a new full-back must be high on the agenda before the end of the week.
