Oxford United Set To Continue Summer Spree

Oxford United are on the verge of their ninth summer sighing in Ipswich’s Greg Leigh, according to Liam Rice of the Witney Gazette

The U’s are off to a good start in their League One campaign and look set to strengthen further after an impressive transfer window. However, the Yellows will have to wait to get the green light from Ipswich, with the Championship club looking to bring in Manchester United’s Brandon Williams before they allow Leigh to depart.

Who Is Greg Leigh?

Starting his career in Manchester City’s academy, the 28-year-old bounced around in League One with Crewe Alexandra and Bradford City after leaving the Sky Blues. Ending up at Bury for the 2016/17 season, Leigh went on to make 100 appearances for the club before spending a season at NAC Breda in the Netherlands and Aberdeen the year after.

Becoming quite regular to moving clubs every year, the Englishmen have spent the last two seasons playing for Morecambe and Ipswich in League One.

Competition For Player Of The Year

Despite having a star at the left-back position in Ciaron Brown, United manager Liam Manning has previously expressed his desire to find an alternative to last season’s club Player of the Year. With 22 appearances in all competitions for the Tractor Boys last year, in their promotion-winning campaign, Leigh has close to 200 games of experience in the third tier of English football.

Looking On The Up?

Following a poor season that saw them depart with long-term manager Karl Robinson and come close to relegation, the U’s has begun the new season strong with three straight victories, including wins against Derby County and Barnsley.

Writer’s View

Ipswich were an extremely talented team last season and while Leigh may not have been a regular contributor for them, he still has what it takes to compete in this Oxford side. While he may be due to sit behind Brown for the time being, he will certainly add experience to a team that is looking to fight near the top.
