Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, has stated his plans to bring a couple of new faces to the Racecourse Ground prior to the transfer window shutting, as reported by The Leader.
The words came after Wrexham’s opening day defeat against MK Dons, in what was a disappointing performance from the Welsh side. As favourites for the League Two title, there has certainly been a lot of pressure heaped on Parkinson’s side this summer, and that pressure seemed to affect the players, with the side suffering their first defeat at the Racecourse Ground since November 2021.
The hosts would find themselves 2-0 down after just ten minutes, and struggled for long periods of the game. As always, their attack was in good order, but their defence looked incredibly shaky and they were unable to stop the Dons from putting five past Ben Foster in the Wrexham net. The 5-3 scoreline is something that very few would’ve predicted at the start of the day with Wrexham favourites for the win. Phil Parkinson has said there are plenty of positives to take, but there are also some obvious problems that the club needs to rectify prior to the commencement of the summer window.
Wrexham have made just two signings this summer, with neither of those featuring on Saturday. Will Boyle, who was brought in from Huddersfield is facing a spell on the sidelines through injury, whilst new-boy James McClean was not eligible to feature following his transfer from Wigan the day prior. Both will have impacts in due course, but Parkinson is still looking to strengthen the side.
Talisman Paul Mullin missed the game through injury and his presence was certainly missed. A punctured lung in pre-season will leave the striker out for a couple of months, so one would imagine that Parkinson will be looking at bringing a striker through the doors in the coming days.
What’s been said?
Following their opening day defeat, manager Phil Parkinson said:
“We are looking to add a couple more players before the window closes and if we do that, I am confident we have got a very strong squad.
“If we don’t, we have still got quality more than we showed today in terms of the ability on the football pitch.”
Writer’s view
I fully expect to see Wrexham make some quick changes off of the back of their opening day defeat and it would come as no surprise to see some new names in the building this week. The injury to Mullin leaves a sizeable void in the attack and that will be the first position that the Red Dragons will be looking to address. Following Luke Armstrong’s transfer saga at Harrogate, it wouldn’t be out of question if he is one of the names heavily linked with a move in the coming days.
