Everton midfielder Lewis Warrington has secured a loan move to newly-promoted Championship side Plymouth Argyle until the end of the season, the club have officially announced.
Warrington has spent his entire football career with the Toffees, making his competitive debut for the Premier League club last August before joining Fleetwood Town on loan shortly after.
This was the youngster’s second loan spell of his career, having spent the second portion of the 2021/22 season with local rivals Tranmere Rovers in League Two.
However, it was at Fleetwood in the previous campaign where Warrington earned plaudits from fans and coaches alike. Speaking to club media after a game back in September 2022, assistant coach Steven Whittaker heaped praise on the Everton academy product:
“Lewis has been great. He is a great centre midfielder for us. He constantly wants the ball, so for the moments when we try and play, we know he never hides – he wants [to get] on that ball.
“He gets us through the thirds in a certain way and helps us build play. His stats and his work rate are second to none. He has been a big part of what we have done.”
Schumacher’s thoughts on the move
Warrington will be guided by fellow Evertonian Steven Schumacher at Plymouth Argyle for the remainder of the campaign as the coach has added depth to his midfield department ahead of what will be a gruelling nine months of Championship football.
In the club’s official announcement of Warrington’s loan deal, Schumacher said:
“I’m very pleased to welcome Lewis to Argyle for this season. He had a very good season in League One with Fleetwood last year, and I am very confident he will replicate that in the Championship with us.
“He is a very energetic midfielder, full of running, who will complement our style of play perfectly, and add to our options in that area of the pitch.”
Writer’s View
Warrington is a wonderful footballer, easy on the eye and has all the right traits to adapt to the demands of the Championship but also to Schumacher’s style of play.
While Plymouth Argyle are now in England’s second tier, the boss won’t want to sway too far from last season’s philosophy, built on fluid, attacking football. Warrington slots in very nicely with this ideology.
It is a great move for all parties on paper and Everton will be hoping that Warrington’s move will be a success. Maybe next season we’ll see the midfielder in the Toffees’ first-team squad should he knock the challenge of the Championship out of the park.
