Swindon Town have suffered an injury blow ahead of the upcoming season as they’ve confirmed that left-back Reece Devine has sustained a hamstring tear, according to their Twitter account.
The 21-year-old, who was previously on the books of Premier League giants Manchester United, picked up the injury following the Robins’ pre-season friendly against Championship outfit Swansea City.

Who is Reece Devine?
Playing in the youth academies at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Manchester City and Manchester United, left-back Devine went on to be a regular in the Red Devils‘ U18 and U21 squads.
It was during his time with the Old Trafford faithful in which he would head out on loan to build up his experience, with the 21-year-old heading out on a temporary deal to play for Scottish side St Johnstone for the 21/22 season.
Making a total of ten appearances for the club, his loan spell at St Johnstone would be cut short for him to make the move to League Two Walsall for the second half of the campaign, in which he went on to make eight appearances for the Saddlers.
Upon being released by Manchester United in June 2022, Devine would make the permanent switch to Swindon Town that summer on a two-year deal. Devine has made two appearances so far for the club in a spell which has been blighted by injuries, with the full-back being ruled out for four months in March 2023 due to a hamstring problem.
What’s been said?
Speaking to Total Swindon as to how pre-season is currently going, boss Michael Flynn has confirmed that alongside Devine’s injury which is looking likely he will need surgery, there has been another injury picked up by defender Tom Clayton, with the club awaiting results of an MRI scan.
“We had two injuries against Swansea. We are waiting on the full analysis on (Tom) Clayton and that is anything from 6 to 12 weeks,” said Flynn.
“(Reece) Devine had a really bad hamstring tear and I think it will need surgery. When I was at Walsall. he was going through that rehab and again last season. It will be a real test of character and all we can do is help him.
“Swansea were kind enough to ultrasound scan both and we are waiting for an MRI on Clayton.”
Writer’s View
With what is another injury to Devine which looks like will keep him out of action again for some time, it’s certainly another blow for himself as he’s suffered some horrendous luck over the past couple of seasons, especially with Swindon.
The 21-year-old will still feel he’s young and has something to prove but if he can’t get over his recent injury problems, he’s going to struggle to do that. Devine is a fighter however if previous setbacks have shown and will look to quickly return to full fitness and break in the Swindon team as soon as he can.
