Former Accrington Stanley Defender To Seal SPFL Move

Former Accrington Stanley defender Michael Nottingham is set to join Scottish Premiership side Livingston on a free transfer, according to Pete O’Rourke from Football Insider.

The 34-year-old looks set to join David Martindale’s side on a free transfer after Stanley announced that the defender had left the club, nearly four years since he first joined from Blackpool in October 2020.

Who is Michael Nottingham?

Born in Birmingham, Nottingham started his career in the Northern Premier League Division One South with Romulus and also with Castle Vale JKS. He also had a short spell in 2011 with Redditch United.

After his spell at Redditch, the defender signed for Gresley in the Midland Football Alliance and went on to make 90 appearances for the side, scoring nine goals. Nottingham won the Gresley Directors’ Award twice and was voted in the Northern Premier League Division One South Team of the Year.

In the summer of 2013, he made the move to Solihull Moors who at the time, were in the National League North, as he made 39 appearances and played a starring role in the team as Solihull finished the 2015-16 season as champions. Because of his performances, he swept up the Supporters’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season and was voted in the National League North Team of the Season. In three years, he made 109 appearances for The Moors and scored nine goals.

He left Solihull and signed for Salford City to be closer to home with his partner. He made 44 appearances for The Ammies in his first season, was named Supporters’ Player Of The Season and was once again named in the National League North Team of the Season for a second time. In his second season with Salford, Nottingham helped the side win promotion to the National League and for the third year in a row, was named in Team of the Season.

He switched international allegiance to Saint Kitts and Nevis and made his international debut in June 2017 for two friendlies in Europe against Armenia and Georgia. Those are the only 2 appearances he has at international level.

In 2018, he joined League One side Blackpool on a free transfer after his contract at Salford ended. He moved on loan to Crewe Alexandra in January 2020 and made his debut in a 1-0 victory against Cheltenham Town.

In October 2020, after failing to join Crewe after Blackpool gave him a new deal, he moved to the Wham Stadium on a three-year deal and went on to make 108 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals. The defender was unable to help save Accrington from the drop as they were relegated back to League Two following a five-year stay in League One in 2023.

The signing of Michael Nottingham for Livingston will bring David Martindale’s side a wealth of experience, having played plenty of games at both League One and Two level, whilst also having international experience.

The St Kitt’s international also brings leadership to the Lions, as he was captain during his time at the Wham Stadium despite their relegation at the end of last season.

Overall, a great signing for Livingston having finished 7th in the Scottish Premiership last season.
