Rangers And Championship Clubs Circling Former League One Loanee

Burnley defender Bobby Thomas is a target for Scottish top-flight side Rangers, as well as Championship sides QPR and Cardiff, as reported by Alan Nixon via his Patreon.

The defender is a target for Rangers boss Micheal Beale, with it being unknown if the side are looking to sign the 22-year-old on loan or if they wish to pursue a permanent deal for the Burnley man. However, the Gers face competition from the Championship, with QPR and Welsh side Cardiff also eyeing a move for the defender.

The Burnley man has been out on loan in League One twice in his career, representing both Bristol Rovers and Barnsley last season, reaching the playoff final with the Tykes. The defender featured 26 times for Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers, scoring three times for the Gas. After the switch to Oakwell, he made 25 appearances under Michael Duff, adding four more goals to his name. Thomas has also spent time in League Two with Barrow, where he made 21 appearances for the club, scoring once.

Thomas joined the Clarets in 2017, having been part of Everton and Crewe Alexandra before his arrival. The defender has featured once for the senior side, but it seems he needs more time before breaking into the first team, despite impressing for both sides in League One last season.

Both Championship sides are interested in signing the young defender on loan this summer as they prepare for the new season, and it appears to be the next step in the player’s development after impressing in the third division. Both sides appear to be restricted with signings this summer, Cardiff especially following the ruling from FIFA regarding the Emiliano Sala controversy.

Writer’s View

Thomas has been an impressive player throughout his loan spells. However, a transfer to Rangers would be a big jump and with the side looking at Champions League football next season could mean he may not see regular first-team football. The next logical step for the player’s career is a loan spell in the Championship after the Clarets’ promotion to the Premier League.
