Charlton Athletic are closing in on the free-agent signing of Fankaty Dabo following his release from Coventry City, as reported by Alan Nixon via his Patreon.
It has been a strong start to the transfer window from the Addicks, as they completed the signing of Alfie May from fellow League One outfit Cheltenham Town this past week. And the club are closing in on another highly-rated signing in the former Coventry City man.
The 27-year-old was released by the Championship outfit at the end of last season. It was a heartbreaking end for the defender who missed a penalty for the club in the play-off final, which they lost to Luton Town in that very penalty shootout. Dabo made 19 appearances for Coventry in the Championship last season, with two assists in that spell. He featured 131 times in total for the side in his four-year stay.
The defender is a graduate of the Chelsea academy but was never able to break into the team that has seen young players given a chance in recent years, perhaps learning from their mistakes with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamad Salah. He departed London in 2019 and joined the Sky Blues, and now it appears London is calling once again for the 27-year-old, as Charlton Athletic have reportedly offered a contract to their target.
The Englishman is highly rated and experienced in the EFL and tasted promotion from the third tier once before, playing his part in Coventry City’s return to the Championship in 2020 with Mark Robins. Despite never making a senior appearance in his Stamford Bridge career, the right-back went out on loan a number of times across Europe, one of which came in the EFL with now League Two side Swindon Town.
Charlton has already made one statement signing in Alfie May, who will now be required to step up to the plate with Miles Leaburn set to miss the start of the season after his ankle injury suffered in the Addicks’ opening pre-season fixture with Welling United. Dean Holden is entering his first complete season at the Valley, and promotion could be a realistic target for the South London club next season.

Charlton are preparing for a promotion push and has already begun those preparations by splashing the cash on Alfie May, the club’s next target in Dabo is another ambitious swoop with his experience in the Championship. This could be a signing to force the rest of the division to take notice.
