Cheltenham Town are in danger of losing the leadership of midfield man Liam Sercombe, according to reports on Bristol World.
Sercombe is a vastly experienced member of the Robins squad, having made over 600 career appearances since making his debut for Exeter City back in the 2008-09 season.
Who is Liam Sercombe?
Sercombe is a hugely experienced midfielder born in Exeter before making his professional bow with his hometown club. He would represent the Grecians over 250 times and would celebrate promotion from League Two before a move to Oxford United and later Bristol Rovers.
After serving both of those clubs with distinction, the midfielder was on the move again to Cheltenham Town. He has currently appeared over 130 times for the club and was a key member of Michael Duff’s League Two-winning side of 2020-21.
Sercombe is seen as a leading figure inside the dressing due to his experience and the club has offered him a contract extension but he is yet to respond.
Who’s Interested?
The experienced man is reportedly a target for clubs across League One and Two as his contract situation remains unclear. It is his former club Bristol Rovers who are being linked strongly to Sercombe after they have previously made two attempts to sign Sercombe since January 2022. The Gas is looking to add experience to their midfield after Glenn Whelan and Paul Coutts moved into the coaching side and, with the Cheltenham man living in the Bristol area, Sercombe could be a perfect fit.
Writer’s View
The signing of Liam Sercombe may be a fix for the shorter term due to his age but the addition of his experience and leadership to guide any young midfielders could be vital. He has also shown no signs of slowing down, making 41 League One appearances in each of the last two seasons suggesting that his fitness levels are still high and that he can continue to do a job at this level.
