Portsmouth Ace Expected to Leave Club Amidst Championship Interest

Portsmouth midfielder Jay Mingi is increasingly gaining interest from Championship and League One clubs, with Pompey viewing his time at Fratton Park close to over, according to reports from The Portsmouth News.

The central midfielder is coming off a major injury suffered in February, with his contract expiring this summer and no deal yet to be sealed. Failing to make the matchday-squad towards the end of the season and clubs such as Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion and Charlton Athletic interested in his services, Mingi certainly looks to have played his last games for Pompey.

Who Is Jay Mingi?

The youngster joined Portsmouth in the summer of 2021, following his release from fellow League One club Charlton Athletic. Joining the Addicks at the age of 18, Mingi only made two appearances for the club scoring one goal in the process.

Joining Pompey with little experience, the midfielder was sent on loan to National League side Maidenhead United for one month, where he featured nine times for the club. Joining back up with the first team, Mingi struggled to make an impact early on, until a run under former manager Danny Cowley where he showed promising potential.

What Went Wrong At Portsmouth?

Spending just two seasons with Pompey, the former West Ham product never got a real chance to show his talents. Due to injuries and a failure to impress boss John Mosuinho late on, Mingi only made 29 appearances for the Blues, as he now looks set to move on.

The player’s contract situation has been an interesting one over the last few months, with a three-year deal on the table for a while. Unable to agree upon a new contract, his time with the club will be overshadowed by injuries as he looks for a new challenge. A return to Charlton could be on the cards, however, keep an eye on Wrexham with the Red Dragons having a bid rejected for the midfielder in the January transfer window.
