Barnsley’s striker James Norwood has hinted on social media that he could be set for a possible return to Oakwell next season.
Norwood joined the Tykes last summer on a free transfer from Ipswich Town. The striker made 49 appearances across all competitions, with 11 goals and four assists to his name in a season which will be regarded as successful for both club and player.
Barnsley finished the season in fourth having been relegated from the Championship the season prior. Many deemed them to be mid-table at best but manager Michael Duff completely turned the club around upon arriving in the summer of 2022. The Tykes were merely a handful of seconds away from forcing the play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday to penalties but a 120th minute Josh Windass winner broke Barnsley fans’ hearts.
Norwood was an integral part of the Reds campaign throughout the season, and came off of the bench in all three play-off matches. Having signed a one year deal last season, there is a further 12 month option in Norwood’s contract should Duff want to extend the journeyman’s contract.
What’s Been Said?
Posting on his personal Instagram , Norwood said:
“It should hurt a lot more than it does but the way it happened Monday makes it difficult to feel that pain. From where we were as a squad to where we finished Is a world apart. The final showed the togetherness of this squad. We couldn’t have given a better account of ourselves as a team and as individuals. To push for so long with 10 men is credit to everyone associated with Barnsley Football club.
As the old man of the group I couldn’t be prouder of the boys. Old heads on young shoulders, to be able to deal with the pressure and perform how they did was a credit to themselves. We’ll be back next year, more experienced and hungrier. To the fans, Thankyou for coming along with us.
Your support was invaluable and long may it continue. Anyways, pre season starts in about 4 hours so I’m off for a run.”
Who is James Norwood?
The 32-year-old has made over 490 career appearances across League One, League Two and the National League. A classic number nine with an eye for goal, Norwood began his career with his local side Eastbourne Borough before earning a move to Exeter City. Although that move didn’t work out, the striker would go on to sign for Forest Green and then Tranmere Rovers, making a combined 351 appearances for the two. A step up to Ipswich would then follow before signing for Barnsley last summer. Norwood brings a wealth of experience to the dressing room and his experience would be incredibly useful in helping the Tykes bounce back from their play-off disappointment.

The extension of Norwood’s contract is an absolute necessity in my opinion. At 32, he still has a couple more good years ahead of him and his experience will come very useful to the squad as they look to bounce back next season. It seems as if Norwood wants to stay and he still has something to offer, if his contract isn’t renewed they’ll no doubt be plenty of League One clubs lining up for his signature
